Went on a roadtrip to Ontario, the weather was pretty cold so we didnt see any snakes but found other cool stuff that was the first time for me

Heres a few pictures:

Western painted turtle, Chrysemys picta bellii, from Barren Lake, Manitoba

American toad, Bufo americanus, from Kenora, Ontario

Another toad shot

We found three of these salamanders on the same road as the toads. I belive its bluespotted salamander, Ambystoma laterale, but Im not sure.

Another sally shot

A few of these spring peeper, Pseudacris crucifer, was also on that road

Outside Kenora we found this fellow crossing the road, Western painted turtle, Chrysemys picta bellii

Another shot

Spectacular underside of these ones

On the way back home we crossed a bridge over a river with a interesting name, Rattlesnake Creek. There are no rattlers in that part of the province but maybe they once was found there.

We also saw 6 black bears (first time ever I see a wild bear) but the first one we saw was injured in a ditch here in Manitoba

Then we saw another one but disappeared before I had the camera ready. Well sometimes even a posing bear isnt good enough... this third one was more then willing to be on photo but they turned out crap anyway

We also saw one wolf and it acctually stayed within range for a little while but I need a telelens for sure....

Lelle,

Great photos. I like that Chrysemys in particular. Field reports always make we want to head out. Thanks for sharing the trip. :)

On Thursday, we head west to herp for C. viridis. Also in that region is L. hesperus, and Canada's only scorp. :)

Other cool animals possible to see with spines are the black bear, wolf and....
cougar! (though with a population of just 300 in that province... it's kinda like hoping to find a million dollars on the side of the road).

I love the your travelogs/field reports because you have Lelle narrating then Sheri chimes in with the "director's commentary track" ;) Plus the fact you have great wildlife photos.

Thank you so much for making me smile, giggle and blush all at the same time! :D

(We're just finsihing the last minute stuff for the trip, we upped it a day and are leaving straightaway in the AM - hopefully, C. viridis and F. concolor pics coming shortly!)
