Anyone have recommendations for turtles. I have a pretty good handle on reputable sources for inverts and snakes, but a lot of the sources I have been looking at for turtles have pretty mixed reviews. Thanks!

Do you want to buy a turtle or do you want info? For info, I just use reptile magazine but for buying turtles, I just buy from local sources. I’ve heard xyz reptile is good for turtles. I always recommend sliders but I also have a box turtle that I don’t recommend for someone starting to keep turtles or tortoises.

There is no good source for "turtles". Any seller who has a wide selection of species is simply a retailer/flipper, and should be approached very cautiously.

What species are you looking for? Knowing that, you can find out who breeds them, and of those people who are the quality breeders.

The reptile marketplace is very, very different from the spider marketplace. No one breeds all the spiders they sell (because of the enormous clutch sizes vs how many slings of a species one vendor can move), but generally the reliable sources for reptiles are those who breed them.

Do you have a CB box turtle? I can never find them for sale. I've had turtles for years before though. It's legal for me to take one from the area I live but I don't really feel good about doing that

I had a cb Gulf Coast Box

CB do exist.

@Tarantuland

Check out tortoiseforum for cb boxes

They require a varied diet, and they are pretty smart too. They will pick out the food they like from a dish of chopped up plant matter, ignoring the rest.

It’s a big commitment to own one.

I know that they do, I just haven't come across any since I started looking and I've heard they're uncommon. All of the turtles and tortoises I've seen for sale recently at shows have been WC

It was sold to me as a three year old three toed box turtle that was supposed to be captive bred but I can’t tell. I got it from prehistoric pets and after I got him, I realized they are sketchy as hell. My turtle had issues like not eating for a month and barely eating after. He got out of his enclosure and was found 6 months later in my neighbors garden. He was planning his escape and failed😂. The rest of my reptiles are captive bred. Honestly, I can’t tell because the way they were being kept was horrible, 20 turtles in a 125 gallon with barley any substrate to burrow and no uvb. He was probably captive bred but in horrible conditions. He is outside living a good life now. His name is Mr. Bubbas, this picture was taken the day he was found, he was nice after we got him back, he actually ate a couple strawberry’s for me.

Thanks for the rev @viper69 . I already found 3 recommended vendors I couldn’t find before. I didn’t see any box turtles yet but that is definitely the place to look. I saw some really good prices for pancake tortoises 🤔

He climbed over a wall of bricks and under some fence. It was supposed to be escape proof. He is an escape artist. I built it for my sulcatas awhile back. I put him into a zoomed house so he can’t escape while I build a new pen he definitely can’t get out of.

Time will tell if he can escape or not. Curious, how tall was the wall of bricks? The best climbers are wood turtles.

2 feet tall. It’s straight up though. I’ll have to build a lip at the top. I’m confused on how a turtle flips over trying to get in between his water dish yet he can climb a tall wall and get under tight fencing.

Thanks, All! I have had good luck with nauti-lasscritters so far on a few map turtle hatchlings. They were very well packed and healthy. Communication was great.
