I'm so happy, just got more bugs in the mail.

First, to make sure this thread stays on topic, I'll show one of the two P. regalis slings I got from Art. This represents my first personal Pokies. I've seen others, I've seen pictures of others, but until this morning, I'd never seen *mine*. Now I just need to make room on the shelves next to these for when I win the P. metallica tonite ;)

Next up, not a tarantula

See, I said I needed the Pokies to have this on topic ;) This is the baby Chinese giant Scolopendra I got; it's so cute:

And for something very different

I snagged the last two CB Damon variegatus/diadema that Art had. These things are so much cooler in person than in photos:

sorry if you've gone over it before, but why the multiple epithet for the Damon spp. whipscorp? Steve Dixey bred a basketful of the D. variegatus...i wonder if yours is a relative?
sweet shipment. i'm jealous. i have to go to the pet store and get my 1,000 crickets....maybe there'll be something else in the bag too...

i have a feeling, Chip, this will not be your last Pokie...of course, since I'm winning the P. metallica, you'll have to get a different one.

That is a possibility. The multiple epithet is because of Dixey and others reporting that almost all the Damon whipscorpions in the U.S. are actually diadema even though many dealers sell them as variegatus.

Art had these as variegatus but I'm covering my bases.

I'd say that's a given. There are 3 Poecilotheria that I want in my collection: metallica, subfusca, and regalis; so I'm clearly not there yet.

But since *I* am winning the metallica tonight, I'll be mostly there =D

Saaaaaaay.....Aren't you the guy in the not-to-distant past who said you would never get a pokie and didn't find them to be especially attractive?

Never say never!

There is a distinct possibility that I might resemble that guy. I must confess to being weakened and dazed by the coming of P. metallica to the U.S. to the point that I decided I needed some, especially those $400 monstrosities :)

What a darling sling! It has such an expressive little face. They're pretty fuzzy as babies. :)

Are you going to hold him while he's young, or exercise complete restraint?

There was already some unplanned handling with one of them while getting them into the larger sling vial I'm keeping it in. However, other than such unplanned sessions I don't plan on handling. The only Ts I ever handle much are my Avicularia species - very docile, very low threat, and they don't hair me like most new worlders. Of course, even saying "much" in regards to them is an overstatement, I'm just not much of a handler. If I want to handle something regularly, that's what I've got a dog, 3 ferrets, and 2 rats for.

here here. the risk always bummed me out too much. i mean, i get distracted, sneeze, anything, i could kill the little bugger. its a lot more dangerous for your tarantula than it is for you.

you know what's interesting? "topic creep" is interesting. have you noticed we've kind of crept along incremementally changing the subject (i'm doing it now). there should be a scientific study of these boards.

It's all the P. metallica's fault, seeing all that blue on a Pokie, it just does something to your brain. I looked up the passage that Wade was alluding to:
November 2002:
I don't like pokes period. I don't find their markings particularly interesting, and I don't like their body plan... If I ever got one, it would be purely out of curiosity to see if they grew on me like some other Ts I got on a whim have.
But in my defense I also said in a different post:
November 2002:
Poecilotheria: I don't keep any of these, probably never will but it's awfully hard to say never when it comes to Ts. A few months ago I would have sworn I'd probably never have any Africans... well, now I've got two Usambara slings and Toga starburst juvenile

And, you will have to BUY a P metallica, since I'M winning it tonight ;P
The smack talking over this spider is going to be out hand come 7:30 tonight. We're going to find out just how good these new servers are as everybody simultaneously tunes in to see *me* win the P. metallica :D

Hey Code. What is the life expectancy of the two insects? They look really cool. What do they eat? Oh and no needt to worry about room for the Pokie..I have plenty of shelf space available.

Insects? Who you calling an insect, them's arachnids ;P

I've seen their general life expectancy put around 5 years or so.

Bee-youtiful T, CM! Don't worry, we ALL end up getting mean bitey things sooner or later. In this hobby, "never" means "Ahh, well, not right now!"

P.S. Good luck to EVERYONE tonight!
