I have had two die, one was a mature male that I was expecting to die so it didn't bother me. the second was my blondi juvie which I had from a 1 inch sling untill it was around 5 inches, and that really made me mad at myself because I killed it, I should have known better and blah blah blah. but yeah I know exacltly how you feel. but it goes away when you get a new one. better luck next time.

I know exactly how you feel too....the sad thing is, these guys have a little higher mortality rate when compared to gerbils, or dogs etc...

It is weird though, for the limited interaction that you have with spides, how attached you can get to them.

I lost my versicolor due to my own negligence, and I had to fight off a tear for most of that night. Having an overelaborate/overdramatic funeral service for the late spider helps a little :)

Get a few more.....you'll get over it.

Not sure what you mean. A gerbil lives 3-5 years tops, a dog 18 on the outside. The shortest lived male will still make it at least 3 years, and a female might live 40 years for some species. I'd say that compared to gerbils and dogs, Ts are more like a parrot or tortoise.

If you mean relative to individual mortality, my experience has been about 10% sling loss in total, but that represents a lot of factors completely out of our control (post-shipping trauma in 2 cases, nematode infection in 1 case, completely unexplained death in 1 case, and unidentified disease in 1 case). Still not that shabby compared to what the natural mortality rate must be (gerbils and dogs don't have 999 brothers and sisters as genetic insurance plans).

As for the feelings of loss, I don't feel that so much as I do disappointment. There's no emotional bond between me and a T, it's more like when a favorite houseplant up and dies in spite of your care.

Yeah, that statement was based on no real fact. I was more just referring to the fact that individual T's tend to die for mysterious, random reasons.....where as it's not often you come home one day and see your dog in the corner in a death pose...especially after it was just playing frisbee w/you the day before.

I have to agree with Code. I have no emotional bond with my spiders. When I found my tiger rump on the floor dead after it escaped its terrarium that I made for it, I was like "Shixt! That spider was just starting to get some size on him. I guess I'll have to order a new spider (EXCUSE ;P). Maybe I'll get one that is a tad bit less skittish than this one." (I ended up getting an Usambara -- I'm not sure what I was thinking  !)

Jon

p.s. Psycho, how were you keeping your B. smithi?

We were keeping him in a small deli cup 1/2 filled with potting soil. The same potting soil that I keep all my T's, and some of my herps on. He was really tiny, probably about a 1/4''. No hair or anything yet. It's hard not to get attached to any type of animal or insect we keep (invert or vert :( )

ps. There's nothing wrong with usambara's.. I have 2 more added to my collection thanks to Wayneo!! Thanks again dude!!!

We payed $25 for the 1/4 inch B.Smithi sling...what my dream with the B.Smithi was to watch it grow and see how it progressed

I have one B. Smithi baby sling and he is getting big on me and he is in very good health. I've been taking care of it and feeding it like 2 or 3 crickets a day and he eats them. Sorry to hear about yours

What a bummer. My Blondi sling just died. He molted about 2 weeks ago to 2 1/2 inches but failed to thrive. He was quite active (as Ts go) until a couple days ago. He never would eat after the molt, though. Yesterday, I noticed him lying in an awkward position almost like a curl and today he finally gave up the ghost. I was really looking forward to this spider growing up. Even my gf was coming around to the thought of such a big spider around. Oh well. I put the body in my Zebra cage but she's turned her nose up at it. I might bury him. I can't bear just throwing him away and he's not big enough to preserve. Sad thing is, yesterday was the reptile show and had I known he was dead I could have gotten a new one. Guess I'll wait til next month. I definitely feel a void.
