I was out at the trail I usually go to almost daily and decided to explore a bushy area off a path and found about 30 of these guys at the base of a tree in a nest. At first I thought it was a funnel web hole because of all the silk but then I saw these and instinctively stomped them before realising they're not woolly bears (I think). I think these are the caterpillars of the bag-shelter moth because they lived in something that looked like what a bag shelter would be but they don't cause any irritation. I picked them up about an hour and a half ago. The last file is what the nest of these guys look like which is very similar to what I found, the first photos are after I stomped on it. As I am finishing typing my left pointer finger is getting irritated.

I don’t understand why you killed them, moths are practically extinct here I never see them. They probably have irritating hairs .

Both are native species and non invasive , the strong urs explain the itching , but I’m sensitive to the North American ones with similar hairs . Ofc I never see them. You can always post a photo first for identification to see if it’s an invasive species. :D
I used to see tent, caterpillars everywhere but I don’t see them anymore ever. Pesticides seem to eradicate everything.
