Now that I got me my little baby corn... can I out things for it to climb? Should I ALWAYS keep my lamp on it? (i have a room temp side too =D) IThe lamp is a desk lamp and does get a lil hot, and I also have a small heating pad.

If you dont already have one get a heat gauge and monitor the ambient temperatur in the tank. They seem to be more active and like the conditions at 75-80 F Warning they are sneaky lil buggers so make sure the lid you have is secure.

P.S what did you mean by the above statement

I wouldn't use branches , tree limbs etc. what I would use is one half moon shaped non-transparent hide at one end and a moss pit (tupperware with hole in the lid with wet moss inside) at the other end. The moss pit will get you full skin sheds. they will "climb" on top of both these items. Good Luck

Elmolax, the substrate is fine. You could put branches in your tank for snake to climb on, corn snakes have specialized ventral snakes for climbing trees in the wild. Just make sure your tank lid is very secure otherwise you would just be making it easier for it to escape.

Though as youlosepayup is saying make sure you have a place for them to hide they stress otherwise (though I don't really think they need to be half-moon shaped as he described mine aren't). You should have one on both ends, one on the cool side and one on the warm side. Also he describes a moist hide, tupperware with a hole and wet moss inside, which if you live an area with low humidity would be necessary, up in the northeast I'v gotten away with just a very large water dish and room humidity.

Corns are the greatest, got a snow and a normal.

I have a hide on my warmside... the rock XD
It is able to get under it and just hang out. On the cool side I have nothing as of now... Payday is so far away -_-
About how warm do I keep the warm side?

I don't see why you can't use branches for your corn. Granted, they're not AS arboreal as the other Pantherophis ratsnakes, but they will still do some climbing. However, if you do get branches from the outdoors, make sure you sterilize them before introducing them to the cage. Some bake wood/branches in the oven, and others sterilize with a diluted bleach solution. Hide boxes don't have to be the half-log (or half-moon) kind. In my opinion, I don't think they make the snake feel entirely secure...but they will still do the job, just give them an appropriately-sized one where the snake can coil up tightly in. Appropriately-sized flowerpot saucers are great. They touch the snake on all sides, giving it a sense of security, they're dark, they provide a natural shape for coiling in, and they're dirt cheap. Aspen will do just fine, and it will come naturally to the snake to try and hide in it. By rock, I hope you don't mean "hot rock". Hot rocks are the spawn of Satan. If you are using a hot rock, cut the cord, rip the blasted thing out and throw it out the window. Your snake will thank you.

Temp on the warm side should be right around 85 degrees.

no, not a hot rock. just a rock from outside, which is a tad warm =) the rock is shaped as so that there is a cave like thing under it. Ill post pics later.

Just be careful that your corn can't get stuck in the rock or possibly tip it over somehow on himself.

Enjoy your new snake :D
