Heh, those things are kind of fun.

One day, we were fishing and managed to find one about the same size as the ones above. It was kind of neat since I never actually saw a turtle that big. We decided to keep it, unknowing of how large they actually got (I really wasn't into the whole animal thing as much back then) and we already had a few other turtles at home.

Well, we continued fishing a bit and kept having bites on a little cheapy pole we had. If any of you remember, they were pretty common back then (I haven't seen too many lately) but they were those cheap ~5 - $10 poles that were neon colors.

Well, we started to take in some line and there was most definitely something on it. After getting it up to the dock, we found out it was a full grown, very pissed off snapper. I couldn't believe how big it was. We tried a bit to get it up on the dock for the sake of cutting the line shorter (stupid) but eventually gave up and just cut it as close as we could (Basically, all we could get out of the water was his head.)

Those things are massive.

and very dangerous, I was playing with an adult snapper and it snapped a broomstick in half, after that we were looking for all sorts of stuff for it to bite, we ended with a Coors Lite, full, unopened, that was a funny sight, I think it enjoyed that one.

Dangerous indeed!

I love turtles and tortoises but you wouldn't get me near one of those dudes. If you went swimming and one was in the water with you it would probably take a few toes. I saw a nature program where one ate most of a mother duck's brood of ducklings, one by one, as the family was swimming.

Definitely an animal that deserves a lot of caution and respect.

I lived in Mississippi for almost 10 years, and we had a pond on the property. We were nutty teens, and swam with water moccasins and snappers. More then once they chased us out of the pond :)

Common snappers are fun too, but I've always had an affinity for the alligator snappers. :) The park where I walk my dogs occasionally has common snappers swimming around in the shallow, dark areas. I haven't found any babies yet though.

Actually I read an article on snappers in National Geographic which said that sanppers in their environment are pretty much not dangerous at all. It's when you take them out of the water that they get all pissy. They can get huge, and can live for a century or more. Turtles in general are very interesting.

The article said that after Woodstock they harvested snappers out the lake where everyone went swimming, huge ones!!
