I'd imagine as long as there's food, they'd survive since their food comes in liquid form.

If people think they're just getting bitten by mosquitoes throughout the day, I'd imagine they'd just not notice them until they get a major infestation.

Busy lifestyles to blame, maybe?

Whatever the reason, it makes me want to go home and sterilize my linens. *shudder* I'm both fascinated and creeped out by parasitic invertebrates.

They seem to be stowing away with international fliers. They come in on luggage, get left behind at hotels, and the next person to stay in that room takes a few home with them. Nasty business! Before you set up camp in a hotel room ,have a look around...mattress seams, baseboards, seat cushions. If you see what looks like apple seeds, RUN!
