What about a waterbased childrens paint such as they use for finger painting.
Aren't those likely to be the least toxic?

you can get some extremely water soluble non toxic types, disadvantage, in the wild the paint comes off within 2 days

Acrylic paint is fine for invertebrates; use in small doses on harder cuticle areas.
