I'm back with another isopod, and this time we have a (not so) little gem: Porcellio magnificus!
This is yet another Spanish endemism very remarkable for its massive size, with adults capable of exceeding 30 mm in body lenght; mature males are especially imposing as they also have strongly elongated uropods that makes them appear even bigger. A vibrant orange coloration with a thin white skirting completes the picture. Hailing from dry rocky areas, these isopods require a mostly dry enclosure with a good air flow. While i had these for only a short time and thus no breeding yet, i did have a thriving colony of the species some several years ago and when many are seen toghether they make for a truly impressive pod.
Assorted sizes!
A male. While still young, the uropods are already quite elongated. In fully grown individuals they'll become even more showy!
Another male, this one still even younger. As you can see, the uropods are small, but still a bit bigger than what you'd find in a female
of any size.
