Very good camera. It has some stiff competition in the DSLR field though. The D50 models are supposed to be very good values and have been a PC mag 'editiors choice'....
dpreview.com reviews everything ou want to know about cameras (and more)

Hi!

It is a good camera. Just keep in mind that there will be follow up costs, e.g. new lenses. Usually the kit lenses are crap, and good lenses are pretty expensive. You will also need flashes, tripod etc.
A good P&S or bridge camera will take better pictures than a DSLR with a cheap lens.
And another thing, you will need to do some postprocessing. The pictures straight out of a DSLR are a bit flat, after adjusting sharpness, and levels etc, they become really good. The DSLR are designed for this, the postprocess inside the camera a lot less than with P&S cameras, so you have more options for manual PP.
A nice quote: You are not only buying a camera, but are buying into a system.
I'ld go like this:

Make a list of what your most probabale subjects will be --> your style of photography (think about is a P&S or a brdge good enough for me) (be self critical!!)
e.g. do you want to make it a hobby of yours or just documenting your t's

go into a shop and hold & test different DSLRs (which ones feel the best) with whose philosophy do I get along the best) (Canon, KonicaMinolta (Sony), Pentax, or Nikon)

Do research on it (dpreview, steves digicams, luminous landscapes, etc.)

find out what lenses are the best for your uses, which ones can can you afford (which one has the best Price/performance ratio)

go and buy it.

For PP software like Photoshop, Corel Photopaint is very good, but also Gimp (freeware) is good.

There is much more to it than going into shop and paying XX$ for a camera.

An don't forget: the camera doesn't mke the photo, the person behind the camera does. Means: a bad photographer with an excellent camera doesn't make perfect pictures.

and Megapix isnot everything
