We have all seen these threads so I'm going to start mine, I hope you don't get upset with me. Which tarantula should I get next? The options I am looking at are C. elegans or D. diamantinensis. There is no option for "both" at the moment. I have been in the hobby a while now, maybe around 10+ years and am at the point where I like chill feedings/rehouses/maintenance. These days I really only focus on NW arboreals, mostly Caribena and Avicularia species. I've kept many fast huntsman/true spiders and even had some P. metallica in the past. I'm at the point in the hobby where I do not want to have a catch cup near me when doing feeding/maintenance. The species I mention next make me want to throw this belief away, and I need you guys to tell me if it's worth it. I hear D. diamantinensis are bolty as slings, and sometimes defensive. They are absolutely beautiful though and I see why a TON of people keep them. For the C. elegans, it's a no brainer. Super chill and small dwarf spider that I have never worked with. Hopefully you guys can help me make my choice. Thank you AB fam.

I don’t have either, but I’ll put in a vote for the C. elegans because I love them and want one myself.

dont ever trust a c elegans atleast until its got a burrow dug out and established i spent the better part of a half hour trying to catch my sling after it ran up and over the side of its deli cup. not fun at all doing it with one hand and the sling smaller than a match head. add in bad eyes with that tiny sling so fragile it was a total pain to catch it again :rofl:no more keeping midget ts for me. second what viper said always keep catch cups in reach. get complacent or thinking it cant happen to you not a good mindset to have.

6 n x2 3's, diamantinensis is a little crazy especially as slings, but more they aren't afraid to throw a threat pose if caught out but they like to be hidden in the web 99% of the time.
Elegans just hide mine burrowed. I never see her maybe once every 4/5 months if I am lucky.
She disappeared so long as a sling I thought she was dead, didn't take food for about 7 months I thought the worst n dug her out only to find a very cross girl alive n well in a room under the sub.... she taught me I needed to be patient and trust my t 😆.
Plus I believe not all of the elegans burrow, I am sure @viper69 told me his lives on the surface and he see's her most days.
I suppose if chill factor is what you want I would go elegans just because diamantinensis are crazy as slings n elegans are chill throughout 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Everytime I open one of my C elegans enclosures I put it in a a container and have multiple catch cups at the ready 😆. The little guys are fearless.

One of mine stays burrowed most of the time and the other one has never burrowed and is out all the time. Seems like they're quite the mixed bag.

My vote is for the C elegans. Beautiful, fast growers, great eaters, and they stay small so they don't take up much space.

I can't even call mine a pet hole girl is a total ghost 😆. I have a Cyriocosmus sp oronegro that is quite visible though, has burrowed and webbed but even at 1cm dls sits out alot, but my elegans, invisible 😂. I think like you said Cyriocosmus in general are just a mixed bag n like most stuff it depends on the individual specimen. But regardless of how they choose to live they are definitely more chill then diamantinensis .

I didn't find either to be particularly bolty or challenging. Fast, but more likely to bolt back to their web tunnel as long as they feel secure in it. I would go with whichever species appeals to you more. My cyriocosmus are underground more, the D diamantinensis is more visible in her extensive web network. I do give her a little more room to web than some would advise, so maybe that plays a role as well.

i normally do that with all my slings this escape was a careless assumption on my part thinking its got a hole dug to the bottom now so i expected it to run into it instead of doing a lap then up over the side of the deli cup

Decided to go for the D. diamantinensis, too cool of a spider not to have. Thank you all for the help! Maybe at the next expo I can find some C. elegans. ;)
