How well do these two do together?

I have two fire belly newts in a 10 gallon tank that's 2/3 water and 1/3 land and wanted to add a toad or two, I've read that they get along well together, but I want to make sure in case my newts end up as dinner XD

My newts are about 3" and both male, by the way :)

ETA: So newts+frogs are a no go, will be keeping this two and possibly getting another two fire belly newt in the near future to keep these company :) Thanks you guys, you're all awesome! :D (my newts thank you too!) :worship:

simple answer....No they cannot be housed together the toxins in their skin will kill each other in my experience when i was young the newts had more potent toxins than the toads but if i didnt change the water my newt still wasnt in the clear. sure you might see setups like this in petshops but those animals are just housed together short periods of time and im sure the workers pick out quite a few dead. sorry but these animals cannot and should not be housed together....just get another tank.... hope i helped :)

They'll get along fine! We had California newts, red bellied newts, firebellies, tadpoles, and guppies all setup up in a 20long. Never had a problem with them ruffing each other up, not so with the crickets and tubifex worms though!

you did, thanks!! :)

I haven't seen any setups like that at petshops actually, just online. The aquarium I bougth them from had them in a fully aquatic set up with some guppies. Once I got them home and got them all settled on their new terranium they ended up being more terrestrial than I thought they'd be :)

The set-up that I am reffering to was in a petshop that I worked at for 4yrs in high school. We did pull out the ocassional dead animal but Im sure that that was due to them being WC amphibians not from being exposed to each others toxins. I could see that as a potential problem if they were very cramped or stressed, but in a 20long 1/2water 1/2 gravel and about 15 animals they had plenty of space. Our red-bellys hide alot on land, the californias were almost always on land. Just make sure that you dont pick a skinny frog, find the fattest one you can they are WC imports and croak pretty easy! Sorry had to do it:rolleyes:

lol, thanks for the advice :)

I'm not quiet sure I want to put a frog in my terranium yet (must do a bit more research on this lol), but if I did, do you think a 10 gallon tank be enough for two newts and a fire belly frog or two?

i guess people have had different experiences but i dont think newts that are found on different parts of the world should be housed with each other. i hope the newts and toads do well :D

You really need to pay attention to all the people pointing out the stuff about toxicity. These two species cannot tolerate each other over longs periods of time and it will shorten the lifespans of both your newts and frogs. Thinking of it like second hand smoke for amphibians.

Mushroom Spore - thanks for the link!

mrbonzai211 - I decided I'm not going to be adding any frogs (or anything else) to the tank, I really like the newts and don't want them dead :) thanks for the advice!! :D
