Ok a few weeks ago I gave fire bellied newts a shot. It was an utter failure
3 out of 4 died and the 4th escaped. (First time that had ever happened to me. Still trying to figure out how, many theories, no answers.) Now I have this 20 gallon tank set up for newts and I am wondering. "what do I do now?!"
So I am wondering, are there any very large breeds of newts available? preferably 7 inches and up? My fire bellys were too tiny to fully enjoy observing. Also has anyone else had as many problems with this species as I have?!?!

My first batch of fire bellys was like yours, died quickly. Now I got a new batch, but they were larger and more aggressive. I looked them up on the net. Turns out to be a species called a paddletail newt. Much larger, much hardier and more aggressive. They can handle more variable conditions and prefer cooler water. They need more hiding places though because they do tend to fight. This new batch is almost a year old with no deaths.
