I am interested in some of the beetles that are being kept by hobbyists here on these boards, specifically the giant ones so I have a few questions. My ideal beetle would be one that is large and long lived.

1. Whats species are legal to own in the USA

2. Which is the largest of the said species?

3. Which species is the longest lived?

4. What are their care requirments, diet, housing, breeding?

5. Where can you get them?

Thanks in advance!

Apparently no one has noticed my location? I am in MINNESOTA PEOPLE! There are NO large cool beetles up here, and none of my other questions have been answered, I am looking for specific answers not glib responces. Thank you.

Perhaps I was not specific enough in my wording? I am only interested in the "large rihno type beetles(like tityus and grantii) or just REALLY large beetles""

when it comes to insects, "glib" is usually about the best response you can hope for on here, especially considering the current state of usda monitoring of the boards :? .. Like froggyman said earlier (and which has been stated on countless other threads on the topic of "why dont we get any cool insects here in the states?"), about the only beetles you can LEGALLY get here in the states without an impossible to obtain permit are the ones that already live here, the largest being D. granti and D. tityus (male granti usually have longer horns). You'll have to wait till they are in season though if you want adults, which is in the autumn. Just go on petbugs.com and search around, or put up an ad for some and somebody should contact you. That's about all you can do really, save going out west somewhere and catching them yourself (which is probably what the other posters meant earlier when they said "find them outside"). A caresheet for D. granti can also be found on the petbugs website, and I imagine that care for D. tityus would be the same if not identical. Good luck

Oh, and most beetles do not live very long at all. I think the longest lived are some of the large ground beetles and tiger beetles like manticora. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they can live like 3 or 4 years in some cases. Not rhino beetles, though, you'll be lucky if you get a year and a half outta those :(

we answered your questions..its not glib.
if you dont already know the answers to these questions, it may not be something you're ready for yet.
large beetles, especially the hard to get kind are not for beginners.

Have you considered looking for Lucanus/pseudolucanus ssp?

I live in Iowa and I find these very occasionally and have been considering raising them...if I ever find more.

The hunt may be more rewarding than the find, my friend ;)

3. Which species is the longest lived? D.granti 2-4 months, D.tityus 9-12 months (C.B. adults), P.truncatus 1-3 years.

4. What are their care requirments, diet, housing, breeding? For vague and often incorrect info see caresheets as posted previously, otherwise get this book:

There's also info on rearing, adult lifespan, etc. for all the large native rhinos.

You can get it from BioQuip, Amazon, E-bay, and of coures Elytra and Antenna

5. Where can you get them? I'm guessing you didn't search the classifieds for the last month. Grubs tend to be available seasonally. granti grubs are often posted after December because of the hatch time.
