This is my first post on the forum because I'm new to keeping spiders....

I purchased my very first tarantula this past weekend at a reptile show in Omaha from Botar by 8s. My new little friend is a spiderling Avicularia avicularia, who my daughter and i named Tiki.

Anyways, now that I have a tarantula of my very own, I've been taking more notice of the spiders all around me. I found one tonight while feeding my pet rabbits and chinchillas, and am curious as to what kind it is. I promptly put it right back where i initially found it after the photo session was over.

(The color of the spider is a nice medium brown.... my pictures didnt do it proper justice. In the picture of the spider taken once I put it back where I found it the spider looks much darker then it did in real life.)

Thanks in advance!

What you have there is a beaut of a wolf spider. I'm sure some of the people here that are more familiar with wolfs can tell you more about the exact species. They are really fun spiders to watch. Congrats on buying your first T. 8)

I was thinking it was a wolf spider, but wasnt sure. My mother-in-law (who moved in with us) kept saying it was a brown recluse, and she wanted to kill it. Then again, she would like to squash any spider she sees. :-(

I saw this little beauty again this a.m., but this time it was right by the door leading out to the garage.

It's great to be able to say that my m-i-l was wrong this time :) because it looks like this little guy is here to stay!

Most likely Trochosa terricola. Contrary to many other wolf spiders Trochosa females have a white egg sac which they guard under stones.

This might be a silly question, but wolf spiders are harmless, arent they?
I put the wolf spider back where I found it, but i've got a huge rabbit that roams free in the basement. (She's a Flemish Giant, and over 25 lbs.... i cant stand the thought of something that huge being confined to an itty bitty rabbit cage).

The wolf spider doesnt pose any threat to the rabbit does it? I should probably worry more about the rabbit posing a threat to the spider, actually......

No threat to the rabbit. Note that a wolf spider bite is a bite that can break human skin. However, it shouldn't do much more than create an irritated spot. Not exactly a danger!

TarantulaKid, thanks for the congrats about me acquiring my first T :)
Actually, one led to another, and I've now got a few new slings.... an Avicularia Versicolor named "violet", an Avicularia Azuraklaasi named "azura", Haplopelma Lividum named "Azul", and a wolf spider named "wolfgang" aka "wolfie". So far I've only been able to get good pics of the Avic. avic, and the wolf spider.

Here's some pics of Wolfie chowing down on a cricket....
