Well, it all depends on what you like. Arboreal, burrowing, or terrestrial? Aggressive or docile? Big or small? What color?

Brachypelma smithi are great starters and have nice color. Never ever even read of a confirmed bite from one.:D

Welcome to Arachnoboards

Welcome to arachnoboards!

Here are some Ts that are bullet proof, easy to care for and docile for beginners at a reasonable price:

1. Grammostola rosea Chilean Rose (a hobby classic).
2. Grammostola sp. Red Concepcion
3. Grammostola aureostriata Golden Stripe Knee
4. Aphonopelma hentzi Texas blonde

Here are some that are prettier and a little more expensive Ts that are known to flick setae and are better for display:
1. Brachypelma smithi (a hobby classic) Mexican Red Knee
2. Brachypelma emilia Mexican Red Leg
3. Brachypelma boehemei Mexican Fireleg

Here are some arboreals that are good starters:
1. Avicularia avicularia Pinktoe Treespider
2. Avicularia versicolor Martinique Treespider

All nine of those species are captive bred, so you don't have to buy wild caught. Check out the online beeders on arachnoboards and you'll be able to find all of these species.

I highly recommend getting at least one spiderling to get the full hobby experience. :)

I agree with above. But keep in mind you might get one that maybe a little crazy, it just depends.

Well i can remember my frist tarantula it was a Salmon Pink Goliath(L.parahybana) but i suggest geting a Chilean Rose(Grammostola rosea) as your first pet as its quite docile and you can get used to handling tarantulas this is a terresterial speciese. Then you can get more as you move on sutch as pink toe(Avicularia avicularia) this is a Arborial speciese. I would suggest geting females rather than male as males only live up to 7 to 10 years max females live mutch longer up to 10 to 20 years i would also keep a record of all the tarantulas you keep and buy the food you feed them and the time they shed and a estamate of the time it took them to shed i should keep to the new world tarantulas for a cuple of years until we move to the more aggressive tarantulas sutch as King Babboon(Citharischius crawshayi) and cobalt blue( Haplopelma lividum) of the Old world then we come to spiderlings these little guys are a bargon you should really get a few of these as they are mutch cheaper then the adult tarantulas but do have some things sutch as houseing they need very small pots and they dont drink from water bites just get a tea spoon of warter and pore into the pot and give them pin head crikets till they get to a good size all i can say is just get what you whant and be careful what you choose.

You know, everyone is so quick to say, "Get G. rosea" but close to 50% of all questions on here are in regards to them being 'finicky'.

I would agree that a rosie is a good starter tarantula if the soon-to-be owner reads that sticky first. Because I can't tell you how many times someone posts a picture of a rosie on wet substrate.

Avics are tough to keep for some people. I guess it depends on your location. Their conditions are completely different from those of a rose or of A. seemani, so make sure you research enough to know how to properly keep an avic.

Good luck.

WHAT IS A TEXAS BLONDE???? and who would ever think to call an A. hentzi a blonde?!?!?!
Anyway A. anax would be the best starter T IMO for anyone They are almost bullet proof as far as keeping goes. just keep them dry with a hide and a water dish with water in it at least once a decade and feed it once a month or so lol
it also is almost unheard of to get bitten. I have never even been haired by one and you can turn them upside down in your palm and they jsut lay there

I meant to call A. hentzi a Texas Brown, but since you overreacted its better called an Oklahoma Brown. ;P

dont matter to me , its one of the least appealing Ts in Texas. Not that any T is not appealing mind you.
I thought maybe you had confused an A. moderatum (still not a Texas blonde but more blonde than the rest lol) with a hentzi.

still I think A. anax would be the best beginner T

Check out the genus pic gallery and pick a few you like. Then, RESEARCH, REASEARCH, RESEARCH! After plenty of reading you'll find some that fit you. My second was a Theraphosa Blondi(Goliath Birdeater). I learned a lot and wouldnt change it if i could. However, I stressed myself like crazy because of all the horror stories on here. Just keep in mind the t's natural habitat and you'll be fine. Good luck and welcome! This is a great hobby and there are great people one here who can help you. Get familiar with the search is the best advice I can give.;)

Hi!

Nhandu sp., Cyclosternum fasciatum and Brachypelma vagans are very entertaining and not demanding. I haven't owned much other, though :)

Nhandu likes to burrow, is pretty active and quick.

C. fasciatum likes to web, they don't make nests, just web the whole container. Can be fast, and are a bit skittish, but I, personally, never minded about it.

B. vagans are good eaters, and look kinda bulky. A funny, and active T. Just the standard spider everybody needs to own.

regards
Tomek

Drachenjager,

Glad you took my kidding in the manner it was meant, since I wasn't able to get a rise out of you we'll call it a Texas Brown.

I have never kept A. anax and I don't know much about them other than their coloration is prettier than A. hentzi. Is their temperment and ease of care about the same, or are they even more docile and hardier?

Believe it or not I would stray away from G. roseas. I still love them but they can be very tempermental. Mine has never given me any problem but Shes been so defensive as of late and I cant figure out why? Nothing has changed the only thing I can think of is that she is approaching a molt but thats another topic for another day

I "T" sat for a friend who had a rosie, he failed to tell me the thing was the demon spawn from hell, I almost wet myself when she batted the crap out of my hand when I went to change her water:eek:
