Pics are hard to determate species but if I had to guess, I'd say a juvie Brachypelma albiceps. If that's what it is, keep it as you would any brachy. mainly dry with a water dish and a hide.

Erm, I didn't think there was a brachypelma alticeps. There's a grammostola alticeps but it doesn't look like any pictures I've seen. My initial thought was an aphonopelma sp. but I am not even sure you can get those where you're located. Really looks my little aphonopelma sp. (hentzi possibly).

I'm no expert, but my guess would be Aphonopelma anax. Nice looking T.

He talked about B. Albiceps, not alticeps

Here's a picture of it (from tarantulacanada)

Sorry but that's not a vagans. B. vagans has a dark carapace with a light outer trim on both sexes. This one is an immature male.

sorry to mention this but any one remember that B. vagans hybrid that was floating around a few months back... this sorta looks like it. but im gonna have to go with soem kind of Aponophelma spp.

it doesnt matter what it is but if you got it cheap then no worries, another tarantula right?

You'll figure it out eventually. It's a very pretty T reguardless. You can always send the exuvium out to get a proper I.D.

That does look like an Aphonopelma sp., either A. hentzi or A. anax, which look very similar to each other. I really don't think it's a Brachypelma of any sort, and it most certainly is NOT a Brachypelma vagans. I've got a big female B. vagans from the wild Florida colony, and she looks nothing at all like this! You cannot go by ANYTHING that most pet shops tell you about T's, either what they're called, what their behavior is like or most especially, how to care for them! Once in a blue moon I will run across a pet shop whose employees actually do know about tarantulas, but those are few and far between. Most are notorious for mis-labeling tarantulas and other inverts. The container that this T was in might have even previously held a "Red-rump" tarantula, that was sold(or more likely, died), and they just never bothered to change the label on the container and stuck another spider in there. To the employees, a spider is a spider.

Looks like you've got yourself a nice Aphonopelma female in any case, though, which is personally MY favorite genus of tarantulas. Easy to care for, long-lived, and usually very docile-hard to go wrong with our native US T's!

If it was vagans then young vagans do have a light carapace. To be fair there are so many red rump species out there and the only true ID can be got from sending the moult off :)

I think you have a B.vagans. Here's a pic of mine from a year ago

I don't have a recent pic, but the carapace has been darkening slightly with each molt. Now it's a milk chocolatey color. Not black, but getting there slowly (I hope) Wanna get out of this ugly phase dammit! lol
Mine is doing fine with a dry habitat and water dish.

I still don't see B. vagans in your T. Here's a couple of pics of mine at younger stages. As you can see, there is still some distinct coloration on the carapace and around the edge as I described before.

B. vagans This pic was taken in January of 07 and it had a 1 1/2 inch leg span.

B. vagans This pic is the same T as above but six days later right after a molt.

B. vagans Heres the same T again after another molt in late march of 07. Theres a penny for comparison.

So even at a young stage, under 2 inch leg span, there are still color alterations on the carapace even though it has not darkened yet. This coloration appears once the T reaches around the 1/2 to 3/4 inch mark. As I've said, it very well could be B. vagans but I'm not seeing it. You need to send the exuvium off to find out.
