Trittame xerophila from Blackdown Tableland (Australia) 1st pic is female, 2nd male. These belong to the family Barychelidae, which are interesting as they share traits with tarantulas (Therophosidae) being a combination of scopula pads and claw tufts. This means that they can climb virtually any surface including plastic and glass. Finding these was a very special moment for me, hardly anyone has seen this species before, and no male material was known when it was described. This species has some variation depending on locality, the ones from Blackdown are more glabrous and have more abdominal patterning compared to holotype from the Rundle Range. Another interesting thing is that species favours more dry habitat, which is reflected in the name xerophila.
This is a new breeding project for me and a hobby first for the species, I have a real fascination for the Barychelidae. I have a number of slings that have settled into burrows and are feeding, but I also have a male and several females that I have been pairing, and I hope will result in more egg sacs.
Clustered maxillary cuspules without labial cuspules are a defining feature of the genus Trittame
