Well, we went to the San Antonio herp show yesterday, and left with a beautiful rattlesnake! What you say? Yes, He was a little C. atrox x C. helleri, cute and feisty as all get out. Well, I posted him on "South Texas Reptiles" forum, and the VP of the Austin Herp Society PMed me and said to call him right away. Seems that he attended a venom expo the day before and listened to a talk entitled, "What The Helleri?" It appears that Crofab is not effective against their venom, and they don't know WHAT happens when they are crossed with other species. He recommended that I take it back, as he would not even keep one. (And this is a guy who keeps more hots than I can count!) So, figuring this wouldn't be the best first hot for me, I sent the hubby on the 1.5 hour trip back to S.A. to return him. He did, and came back with this:

I must say, I'm quite pleased with his choice of replacement. AND, I was offered a LTC copperhead as a gift, so I'm going to go check him out later in the week!!

Wow, that's good to know! I just pulled this up from rxlist.com on CROFAB

Callenge Venom ED50 (expressed as mg antivenin/mg venom)
C. atrox 5
C. adamanteus 8
C. scutulatus 15
A. piscivorus 3
C. h. atricaudatus 7
C. v. helleri 122
C. m. molossus 25
A. c. contortrix 4
S. m. barbouri 7
C. h. horridus 6

That'll make me think twice about messing around with the local helleri!
