My buddy, Jake (JakeRocks) came over to help with some breeding last week and took photos of a few of my tarantulas. I couldn't get over how pretty the photos came out!

The first photo is Dee Dee, my female Avicularia sp. "metallica." (no more complaining about the species name, now ;) )
The second and third are Nightcrawler, my Lasiodora cristata.
The fourth is Bandit, my sub-adult male Brachypelma sp. "pallidum."
The fifth is Keiran, my TWO YEAR OLD, TWO INCH female Grammostola pulchra. She never grows! =D

Lasiodora cristata

Wow, the Lasiodora cristata is absolutely STUNNING :p Do you happen to know how fast these guys grow when you get them as a small sling...let's say about .5"??

Mine's grown like a weed. It's almost a year old, and is already 3".

Another question regarding Lasiodora cristata

I hope you don't mind me asking more questions regarding the Lasiodora cristata. I've been looking at getting my 2nd T, but as a sling, and now I wonder whether the Lasiodora cristata are hardy? Are there any special requirements? I also read that they are VERY agressive. I'm not planning on handling the T, but will they "attack" you as you perform maintenance in their habitat???? :?
Any help on that matter would be SO appreciated.

I have a female L.cristata and she is my pride and joy!! she is about 4 to 5 inches and has a huge apettite...she rarely turns down a pinky or cricket..pretty easy to care for as well....I have her on 100% peatmoss and a hide and a water dish...like I mentioned before I keep her at room temps...she has never shown aggresion while cleaning her tank...they are a great T. in my opinion...if you have the chance to get one I would say go for it...you will not be sorry..

Regards, Mike :D

Decisions, decisions....????

Mike,
THANK YOU SO MUCH for your input. It has REALLY helped me. Like I said, I'm still new to the T-World, I've only had my first T, chilean Rose for 3 weeks, but I'm hooked.
And you mentioned mice :} I was planning on trying to feed Socrates a pinky tonight, but since he/she ate a pretty big cricket last night, I'll hold off until Wednesday.
Could I ask you how long you've owned your T?
Thanks again.

Potentially, this is why you invest in a pair of hemostat like tongs for pulling prey remains and water dishes, if the spider does strike, it bites metal instead of you.

Now for the tarantula hobby political correctness lesson: It is not considered acceptable to call tarantulas 'aggressive'; the acceptable term is 'defensive' even though in regards to tarantulas it means exactly the same thing (I didn't make the "rules"). The pansy ass concern is that when new keepers or the general public hear you use the term 'aggressive' they'll get the wrong impression. Never mind that I don't think it's possible to give the majority of the public an even worse perception than they already have. You also have a school of thought that holds that aggressive should only be used for an animal that willfully approaches and chases you to do bodily harm, pretty much limiting the proper application of the world to humans, dogs, and the occasional angry mother animal. Personally, I think it's ridiculous, but it is the standard terminology within the hobby and some people will get down right offended if you call a tarantula 'aggressive'.

Who you calling pansy ass?! I can let the poison/venom thing slide, cuz I agree with you, but the agressive/defensive thing is one of my pet peeves. It's just a quirk, like my preference of hanging the toilet paper "correctly".{D Wonder why these minor things get under our skin?

I'm not a big fan of people arguing semantics when it's over something like this. If you define "aggressiveness" in regards to tarantulas correctly you have the *exact same* definition as "defensiveness" in regards to tarantulas (exactly like the venom/poison thing in regards to the general definition). The people who make a big deal over which word you use seem to be more worried about the reputation of the tarantula as opposed to being clear. I think it's better to just call them aggressive or defensive as you please and then clarify their typical behavior as either word means absolutely nothing accurate at first to the unschooled in the ways of Ts.

(I suppose I could have used my usual word, apologists, instead of pansy ass if that would make you feel any better :D)

Lasiodora cristatus, and Avicularia mettalica

Those are some awsome pics, especially the L.cristatus, and A.mettalica. Your t's have been growing pretty quick, as for mine. I had a little tragedy and loss some t's. Anyways, nice pics and good looking t;s.
