Hello everyone! This is my first time posting here and I have a question regarding the new spider I'm keeping. I recently got really interested in Wolf spiders and was looking to buy one, but no one sells them locally. Given the fact I've never seen one where I live (Northern IL), I resigned to having to order one at some point. But to my surprise, when I spotted something crawling on my floor, it wasn't the normal male grass spider looking for a mate, but what I think is a very dark Wolf Spider! I quickly caught it and set up an enclosure in a critter keeper I had for my jumping spider. It's now happily living in its new home and already ate a medium sized cricket and drank a lot of water. The problem is, I have no idea what sex or genus it is. I automatically assumed it was a girl, given the shape of its abdomen and pedipalps based on other female Wolf spiders I've seen, but I'm not an expert. I welcome any suggestions about husbandry as this is my second spider, coming from a former arachnophobe. I have some pictures below, one of them showing the enclosure, and a video. Thanks in advance, and I'll definitely be posting more when I get my first Tarantula!

Congrats on your new spider. Hard to know forsure... the above comment seems like a good guess but I'd also guess that it is a Hogna Carolinensis. Your husbandry looks great tho!

Thanks for the help! I really love the way they look, their faces are oddly cute. I'd go for it. They're not too common captive bred online but when you can find them they're only around 10 bucks.

I hope that white speck on her butt doesn't mean anything. An elderly male Xysticus got white discharge before he died.

I noticed that too. So far she seems healthy, just ate a good sized cricket, so we'll see. If it does indeed end up being a problem at least she'll spend her twilight weeks in comfort!

Since it has been over a week now and she seems healthy she is probably fine. :)
