Hi everyone I'm new to the hobby and just got my first T which is a juvenile A. Geniculata. The T went into the enclosure without any issues and just wandered in no hair flicking or bolting. My question is.. is it normal for this species to wander slowly or not move at all when first housed?
I can't seem to find anything online about Ts not moving around much when they are first housed.
The T may be in premolt as the bottom side of the abdomen has a large bald dark patch but I've not fed yet. And the abdomen is rather small.

The substrate was a little damp (not wet). I'm using a small plant pot as a hide and a water bowl. That's all that is in there for the moment.
Thanks for any help. 20240111_184548.jpg

I should also mention the T has a dark bald patch on the top of the abdomen too.

Took me less than a minute to find those. Anything you're curious about, just google "[question] arachnoboards" and you'll most likely find dozens of threads on the topic. Our search function isn't very reliable here so googling is usually better.

That's pretty damp, I wouldn't put any more moisture on the sub than what you have right now. It can take days or even weeks for the spider to properly settle in.

For any tarantula it can take a while to settle into a new environment, this behavior sounds normal.

If the pot still has its base break through it, if you don't then the T's hide will have a dead end. Hides need to work as an entrance to a burrow that they can dig down from if they choose to.

Have a good read though this resource > Tarantula Information for Beginners (and More) | Arachnoboards

Oh that's perfect yes the pot still has a base so I'll break through it and replace it. Appreciate the advice thank you.

The abdomen is not small at all. I think so many people have gotten used to tarantulas being fat as ticks on social media; Tom Moran just had a podcast episode on abdomen size and tarantulas being “skinny”. Great podcast in general to check out if you haven’t! :) she might have been on some abrasive substrate before, and could be in pre-molt, which would explain baldness, although some of my Ts like to leave hair all around the entrances to their enclosure in an attempt to make me itchy during maintenance lol. I think your baby will look happier once the sub dries out some, all of my arid species act like the floor is lava if it’s too damp. Some tarantulas are super easy to rehouse, super chill, and some act like drama queens and don’t settle in for a month or more. Make sure she has a water bowl, let the sub dry some, maybe add a second hide and she will be okay!
