Today we purchased our first baboon, and we were wondering if there was any special advise on the keeping? its only a baby, maybe an inch or so in legspan, maybe a tiny bit more.

Its got moist soil, put in loosely to allow him to burrow, a hide, a few bits of bark..

Seems happy so far. Its already demonstrated its nerves and agression at a pair of tongs.

I've heard its more venomous than the average pet T, so I was just wondering if anyone had any special advice or general information about behavior / toxicity etc. I've had a mosey about, just wondering if you experts had anything to add :?

Thanks,

Hana and Adam

C.crawshayi are quite aggressive/defensive tarantulas and they do have a more toxic bite compared to other tarantulas. I'm not sure what the toxicity is of their bite (never been bitten), but I'm sure it wouldn't make you feel good. C.crawshayi are awesome deep burrowers, so provide a lot of moist substrate for it to burrow in. Make sure you keep the soil moist by spraying with a water bottle, but allow the top layer of the soil to dry between mistings. When your C.crawshayi starts to get bigger it will look like a red velvety-monster, but of course, it won't be for a while before you get to see that... (they're slow growers but it's worth the wait.)

You will be wanting to get more of them. If you have about 90, you will see one of them almost every day...... If you only have one, once it goes down under and closes the door, expect 3 months before it comes back up for food!

I'm working on getting the requisite 90, its definitely my favorite!

Any rehoming tips? Im planning on moving him to a deeper box as soon as it arrives but ive heard they're notoriously hard to move from box to box

with any particularly defensive T, especially OWs, it's best to give it a lot of focus and patience. when i deal with an angry T, i move the spider into a vial or a larger (but still small) container to give myself a break halfway in. it also minimizes the time the spider spends not contained.

Be afraid, be very afraid. (seriously just be careful, and remember when it gets to a certain size, like 4 or more inches, maybe its time for it adult size home. The idea of moving a 6-incher I find daunting).
