Just got back from the East Bay Vivarium, went to trade 40 scorp babies(didn't have the space to keep 'em) so I got this A.urtican, its a prety good size sub adult and Female to boot.

Shhhhh... you'll anger the dealers who sell these poorly defined Avicularia complex specimens for higher prices =D

It may be a different species, it may just be a slightly larger A. avicularia complex geographically isolated from the rest of the distribution. The only thing that's going to settle these things for certain is molecular analysis of wild caught specimens (which ain't happening with Peru) for genetic relation.

I know you can't see it from the pic, but the over all color is brown/tan especially the guard hairs, where as my Avic is bluer with red guard hairs. But we'll have to wait and see, even if its another Avic, I only paid $10 out of pocket, so its not a huge loss.

Yeah, the front legs do have kind of a tannish/brown color to them.

A. urticans

Adult female A. urticans (at least in my experience) are significantly larger than adult female A. avicularia.

I picked up one of thes today. It is about 1 1/2 inch. We picked up a bunch of different avic. species. It will be interesting to see what differences emerge. A lot of photos I have seen of the less common avics seem to vary from pic to pic. I finally get to see these guys for myself. I have always liked avics and we now have 3 A. avics (2 s'lings and 1 adult), 1 A. urticans, 1 A. metalica and 1 A. braunshauseni (which neither Johnny nor myself remember buying) I can't wait until they get bigger.

Your right Kelli,

A. urticans are known to be one of the largest Avic's. My A. urticans is definately larger than any A. avic female that I've seen. Also, the greenish/blue color and red gaurd hairs are not present on an A. urticans.

Does anyone have a sub-adult A. urticans that they can show a pic of for comparison?
