We have been wanting to add a redtail boa to our collection for quite some time now. We finally found a really good boa breeder a few hours from us and contacted him. While we know she isn't a true redtail (we haven't been able to find any anywhere near us) we drove out and picked up this pretty little gal.

She was a little stressed after the drive and got a little snappy while going from transport cup to enclosure, but we love her already and once she is settled in, I will get some better pics. I had to make do with my phone as we wanted to get her in her new home as quick as we could and leave her be.

Meet Scarlet, she is 5 weeks old and according to her breeder, already feeding well on f/t. Pics of her in her transport cup from the breeder, and getting weighed quickly before going into her new home.

Nice. Next you should get an albino burmese and name it Col. Mustard so you can get a whole Clue theme going.

Ha, thats cute. Although, I don't know if we will ever get into anything quite that big. At least not until the kids are grown and moved out. Some of the boa morphs you can get though  I'm sure I could find one to call Col. Mustard.

It was actually Amie who thought of the name btw :) I was stuck and asked her for assistance lol It just seemed perfect.

Miss Scarlett is a pretty little Colombian Boa, though it's rather odd that she is snappy. Once in awhile I see a baby Boa hissing and striking, but it's not the norm. One particular bloodline of albinos and Pastels and Jungles is known for a nasty disposition, possibly due to inbreeding to "fix" colors and patterns, but I've got two from that bloodline and they're both very sweet.

You're in Canada, right? Have you checked the ads on Kingsnake Canada to see if anyone has BCC's for sale? I know that there IS a breeder because he posts pics on Deviant Art of his Guyanas, and I am thinking he's in Quebec, since he posts in both English and French.

Thank you :) She was very docile when we looked at her before bringing her home, I'm thinking that the stress of a 2 hr car ride is why she got moody. I had to do a little tweaking in her enclosure after she went in and she was fine with that, so I don't think being "bitey" is really in her nature. The two times she did strike, she didn't open her mouth, so even then it was more of a warning.

Thats interesting about the jungles and albinos. Scarlet's mom and dad are jungle's and she herself is 50% Het for albino. The parents however were both quite "friendly."

I will check out kingsnake canada and see what I can find, thanks for the suggestion. We are in Ontario, so not too far from Quebec at all.

Thanks Tommy :) We've been waiting a long time to pick one up. We've always had pythons and more "regular" snakes (corns etc), so we wanted to make sure we did all our research and had everything set up perfectly before buying her.

I just can't wait until she is settled in and we can start to handle her a bit, get her used to it. Our female BP has to be the sweetest snake I have ever met, so hopefully once Scarlet is more used to being handled she will be a sweetie too.

Thanks Jeff :) Snakes are a dangerous addiction lol we are already looking at some morphs, just not sure whether to go with a Ball morph or a Boa. Decisions, decisions ;)

We really need a bigger house lol, right now we are a little restriced as far as room goes.

Especially with your other acquisitions soon to come in :)

Growing up, I used to catch snakes outside and loved keeping them. Now, I'm limited on space and don't want to deal with the smell that comes from them. My crickets are bad enough. If I eventually get a bigger place and have my T room, I'd probably get a snake of some sort. Right now, its everything I can do to keep from buying spiders

I honestly don't notice any smell from ours, granted in the place we are living in now, it's always just been Ball Pythons and now the Boa. Crickets smell FAR worse (aren't I a great friend?! trying to encourage you to get a snake. If it wasnt bad enough that you asked me to tell you not to order the gigas, but I told you to anyway. I am apparently an enabler when it comes to exotic pets ;) )

By this time tomorrow, I should be unpacking 5 more slings :D

I've never noticed a smell from my snakes, either. As long as you keep their enclosures clean, there shouldn't be a problem, unless you have a sick snake. It's a lot more work if you have fish-eating species, and those CAN smell if you aren't rigorous about cleaning, but Boas and Pythons only "go" once every couple of weeks or so, which makes it pretty easy to clean up after them. Now, snake MUSK stinks, but snakes only do that if they really feel that they are under an immediate threat, and I've never, ever had a Boa musk on me, since they are generally so laid-back that they don't think of many things as "threatening".
And I completely agree about the crickets-those STINK!

Its probably a husbandry issue more than anything. I said that because my dad used to keep garter snakes and a corn snake. He kept the tanks clean but maybe not AS clean as he should have. I just remember it didn't take long for them to start smelling and man does snake crap stink!

Crickets pretty much suck across the board

I find if you check daily, and remove any waste right away, there are no issues. No, their waste doesn't smell very pleasant (but really, whose does? :p) but if you get it quickly, the enclosures don't smell :)
