My step-daughter wanted a snake for her birthday and I had to oblige her on that :) I got her a female Ball Python. Nothin' fancy, just a normal, but so sweet! My stepdaughter named her Hazel.

Get in on a conspiracy...

...to bring back the original common name for the "ball python". Of course there can never be a "true" or "correct" common name for a myriad of reasons that I will not go into. You've prob'ly already heard it anyways.
My point is this, the common name "ball python" didn't catch untill the species hit massive popularity in America in the mid 80s. Before that, it had a common name that reflected the scientific name. Python regius = Royal Python. I've heard it said that this species was associated with African Royalty.
We (those of us in the conspiracy) believe that Royal Python sounds so much more dignified than a snake named after it's reaction to fear. Plus, you just don't know the un-ending physiological jokes!:wall: :wall: :wall:
So, join us in our conspiracy to repopularize the use of the name Royal Python!!!

This post is a silly place.
Ball python ball python ball python ball python ball python ball python. ;P Man, who cares? Besides, in my personal experience a name based on their reaction to fear is perfectly fitting for this species...and "dignified" ain't. They're silly little shy lovable goofs and we like it that way, right guys?

Beautiful snake, OP. :)

I neglected to mention that you have a beautiful baby, Akitayoji. I think she will grow into those big regal looking eyes and become a majestic snake.:D

Thank you, I might have to find a nice freaky morph male to breed her to in the future.

We have had her for 1 week now and I gave her a mouse to watch what she would do and she ATE!!!! That was so exciting! So, she is healthy and comfortable enough to eat in her new home! That makes me happy!

My stepdaughter (who wanted a snake) refused to watch the snake eat! I guess I will just have to adopt her :) HAHAHAHA!

As far as Royal or Ball Python...I like Royal better, but, unfortunately, most people here in America have no idea what a Royal Python is :wall: . I just call her "Hazel" :worship:

"Hazel" it is then. That is a pretty name. The love only grows from here.
Here's a question for you, does Hazel eat live or frozen prey items?
That option has about as much controversy as whether or not to feed rodents to Ts and some Royals will not even give you that option.
One thing I like to throw out in the beginning is that even if she will not take frozen thawed now, while she is a bit stressed from acclimating to a new environment, she may be willing to later, when she is a full fledged member of the family!
Cheers and welcome to a brand new addiction!

Um, ah, do I dare answer that?

I fed her live because that is what the breeder fed. I did buy a frozen mouse too at the same time because I will eventually try to get her to take the pre-killed.

I am paranoid that a mouse would hurt my baby girl so I watched when the mouse is with Hazel. One night I watched for an hour and took the mouse out. I tried again the next night and Hazel snagged the mouse within 3 minutes.

Good plan - mice are nowhere near as dangerous as rats, and she's gonna have to be eating those eventually.

And why dont you join our little conspiracy in Denmark and call it what it is... Python regius:? Or we could give it 20 more popnames, and make the confusion complete

I really dont get that popname culture, you got going on in the states, offcource its dificult to remember the scientiffic names of the animals to begin with, but everything is difficult in the begining, but everybody shold be able to learn it with a little studying.

Akitayoji sorry for going a bit offtopic on your thread, congrats with the "little worm" its sure a fine looking regius ;)

That would be the ultimate! You just don't know how phobic people are of scientific names at the pet store level.
It can be very difficult for me switching back and forth between the serious hobbyist referring to a creature by its scientific name and the more mainstream hobbyist using common names.
There really isn't anything that hard about learning one name over another, Ball Python, Royal Python or Python regius. There are alot of good reasons that P. regius is superior, but if the majority of the people you talk to give you blank looks, you get used to Balls, Royal is even just an amusing distraction and token resistance for me.
Besides, I like conspiracies, especially if I get to be in them.
