I recently got a betta as part of a friend's breeing project, and of course it's in semi rough shape from living in a cup at Petsmart. At ayn rate, I believe it has some mild finrot, which I purchased some malachite green for, but lookingaround it seems like most fish keepers prefer hardcore antibiotics for infections rather than malachite. The betta forum I post on is way to slow to get me a reply anytime in the next day or two so i figured i'd ask here: Is the malachite green acutally going to get me anywhere or should I have purchased antibiotics?

I would have gone with the antibiotics. I used to breed bettas and I always used Mardel products and never had a problem with them.

I believe fin rot is a fungus so get some anti-fungal stuff. Don't get Jungle brand though. It doesn't work. Be sure to be careful with the doseage in such a small container too.

Good luck.

I second that.
I had been led to believe the greenish fringe (clearly visible on the second picture) on the tail fins might be fin ro

I just started posting on this board...getting back into inverts and selling off all my fish...you should post your question on www.waterwolves.com That's where I hang out too...great people.... It's hard adding medications to a betta bowl/cup... a filtrated tank (with carbon removed) is much better... These guys can help ya!...very active board....

You've really had no luck with it? Jungle Fungus Clear was the only thing I tried that actually worked to clear up a problem with my goldfish... of course there were also the salt baths and peroxide treatments  ...so maybe it wasn't the "Jungle" after all...

It has a mild case of fin rot, and fin rot is a fungal infection. Good luck treating it. I gave up on betas after a case of overnight mouth fungus that killed my entire group. I

Melafix is a decent medication as well, but for smaller tanks/bowls, use Bettafix or Quickcure.

That betta doesn't look too roughed up though...

I dont see any finrot.... DO NO USE melafix or pimafix unless you know exactly what you are doing. It is very easy to kill your fish with these medicine's. I find Bettafix remedy safer and better for mild finrot.
