I need some hints here on how to trap a terrestrial adult tarantula. My bechuanicus is loose in the room here (I hope) and I need some hints/advice on how to set a tarantula trap. :8o
Okay, put one folded up heat blanket on the ground, (be sure it's plugged in and warm) And turn down the AC, not so low that'll kill your T but low enough so he'll seek new warmth. It worked with my snake, I don't see why it wouldn't work with a T.
The heat blanket seems like a good idea, however, I need some more!! I left the original cage open which has a heat pad and a water bowl, hoping it will be thinking, "theres no place like home"
OK, is it a female? If so, I will tell you a foolproof method. You need to fashion some sort of contraption into which the spider will wander, and whose wandering will inevitably trip some sort of swinging door, sliding barrier, etc. Maybe an electro-magnetic switch which triggers off the selenium ions concentrated in the spider's body....I don't know, you probably have a better way. The details are unimportant, so long as the spider, upon entering the container, will promptly become....well--trapped, so to speak. I'm sure you'll figure out something for this part. The secret is all in the baiting of the trap. You need something that will lure the spider inexorably to the trap. Something a C. bechuanicus would just love to eat, more than anything else, even if it wasn't really hungry. That something is.....a bechuanicus eggsack! Yes, I've determined that female tarantulas prefer eggsacks 100:1 over crickets, mealworms, and roaches. They go nuts over them. They are even more disposed toward eggsacks if they have fairly recently eaten the last male of their own species in your collection.
So, as long as it's a female you have running loose, just build the selenium-activated-solenoid contraption, find yourself a bechuanicus eggsack, and you're golden!
If it's a male, I sincerely apologize, as in that case this post was probably not very useful to you. Best of luck, my friend!
