A member on another forum posted a thread about a spider he found, and included some pics. He is curious to find out what species it may be. It came from Central Alabama in a wooded/swamp area. After he captured it, it ate 3 moths that he threw into the container he is keeping it in, lol.

Here are the pics. I know its not a recluse. It doesnt look like a brown widow, and its abdomen looks too round to be a brown house spider. Any ideas here?

don't know the scientific name, but we call them garden spiders here, seeing how they are usually found in gardens(redundancy, huh?). toss in a couple sticks for her to make a web on and she'll be happy as apig in mud....

It looks like a Neoscona sp., Orb Weaver spider. Try a web search for Neoscona. You should turn up some decent photos. :)

Of some ?good reason Neoscona is called "spotted orb weavers".
Try a search on Barn orbweaver (or Barn spider), Araneus cavaticus, but don´t trust any internet searches...

A list of common names of spiders is found at
