I just found this beautiful corn in the street. I carried it back to my house (about 100 meters) away and I thought it was pooping but when i got home I realized it was organs. I'm not sure what to do and it would be a shame for such a beautiful creature to die. Please help. It appears badly injured and I'm not sure if it will survive anyway but It stands a better chance inside away from the fire ants and other dangers. Also I'm not sure if bedding was such a good idea please let me know.

Does it seem to be coming out of the cloaca? If so, it could be a prolapsed hemipene (which is treatable). Whatever the case, you can call around to local wildlife rehabbers, often they have contact with vets that will work on injured wildlife pro bono.

Good Luck

Edit: the sustrate looks like it will stick to it...may want to swith to paper towels or something.

It's 9 30 here and I'm not sure if I'll be able to get ahold of anyone. Do you think he/she would survive the night? I updated the picture that did not come though. I also layed down papertowels so the bedding would not cause problems with the injury.

It should survive the night as long as it is not bleeding. Use paper towel or newspaper as a substrate and give it a hide and some water. Best thing to do is to contact a vet or rehaber. I have had snakes for a while but never had a prolapse so i cannot help ya here. Sorry :(

There seems to be a little bit of bleeding, but just a few spots where the injury was.

Depends... if it is a hemipene, than yes it should. If it is an injury from a car, predator, etc. it may have some internal damage that could kill it. That being said, I have seen snakes make full recoveries from some pretty horrendous injuries (in one case, ribs and intestines exposed on a big black rat snake. Sent it to a vet school and they treated it and sent it back good as new in a few months for release).

Beautiful corn by the way.

Looking at it now it appears to be more than hemipene sticking out, or the hemipene is realy abscessed. I saw the few spots of blood. as long as its not gushing it should make it to the AM. We have a black racer at work that had its head run over by a lawnmover tire. It lost an eye and half its face and most likely broke its jaw and its getting better. Snakes are really resiliant animals.

Yeah, is that pic new or did I not see it the first time:?

Little hard to tell, but it looks like it might be coming from the cloaca area, but it looks a lot messier than any prolapse I've seen-not sure what to think. Almost seems like some shredding is going on. Is that skin flap above it the top of the cloaca, or does it look like the edge of an injury? If it is hard to tell, the ventral scales below the cloaca are in two rows, just one row above it. If there is any debris stuck to it try to flush it off.

:( I'v been trying to get ahold of local vets but all of them are booked with surgury. The corn is still alive and quite active with no bleeding. She ate a pinkie that I offered her and is drinking water I'm going to try again tomarrow. I hope she makes it :(

glad to hear

hey patrick glad to hear that the corn is still alive, i am guessing since it ate and is drinking water that it will make it through this, i would also (IMO) try to flush the organs with fluids several times a day that way the organs dont cause any more dehydration to the snake due to fluid loss from organs... anyways man keep us posted, i really hope that it makes it through....

The corn died:( I took it to the vets and they were unable to save it. I buried it in my backyard. It's a shame to see such a beautiful animal die.

That is sad, but you tried your best, alot of other people finding it would probably have poked it with a stick or something terrible.

At least you did all that you could.

That is truly sad. Im glad you at least attempted to help it!

On a good note. I saved a common garter snake from a shovel weilding neighbor!! He smashed it at least twice before I was able to save it. I disinfected its wounds and kept it for a week in a warm dark cage. I let it go last week and it was slithering normally and SPEEDY! :D
