Ok, my A. Aurantiaca Sling molted earlier and it seems to still be stuck in the molt by 1 leg and another seems to be a little mangled but out so I am not worried about it. But im wondering if there is anything I can do about the stuck leg, i misted a little in the vial in hopes that she may free herself but she still seems to be stuck. I would say she was 3/4" before the molt and prob around 1" now. Should I just wait until morning and see if she made it ok or should I do something now? I have been waiting for awhile already and want to know if I should just wait longer. Please respond asap as I would like to figure this out. I am not freaking out I just wanna take the best possible course of action.

thnx for the replies

Don.Theres going to be a point in time where youre going to have to make the decision to take off the leg.(considering it doesnt come out soon)I learned this the hard way with a large H.Gigas.If you have to do this youll need to take the leg off at the joint where it meets the body, then youll need to apply a bit of liquid skin, some people use super glue to the area to stop fluid loss. Its a tough decision to do this and when.I hope you make the right choice and it time ,not like I did..Good luck....Rich

When is the right time? I thought if they had a problem they would just drop the leg off themselves. I have had to use nu-skin on my H. Maculata which was about 3" but this one is so tiny and it would be very hard to see any blood loss.

Please some more people respond. Should I take the leg off or wait?

thnx

Ok The leg is still stuck, I would prefer not to take the leg off a T so small as im not sure if it would be possible to apply the new-skin to a T so small. but is it possible she may drop the leg off herself or is taking the leg of manually my only chance? is there any way I could maybe cut the molt off of her so that she can just deal with a small piece of the molt instead of her dragging the whole thing around? please give me some responses.

Did you try to soften up the stuck area with a wet q-tip I have heard of others doing somthing similar to help soften the stuck piece then they gently remove it. Hope it turns out ok!

I've never had this happen, so I'm not really in a position to offer advise, but I do hope it all works out. :(

I think it is probably too late but it was a good thought. I wet the area with a q-tip just a couple mins ago and if she doesnt pull out within about 30 mins I think I will amputate =( I really hope I dont lose her. I will feel awful.

Ok sorry about so many posts about this but I was pretty worried for my poor little one.

Well I just went in there to check on her and still the leg was stuck so I decided it was time to remove the leg. But before I did I grabbed the molt with my tweezers and pulled it so that there was tension on the leg and just as I did that she tugged on it real hard and her leg came free!!!!! =) happy for now. Now I will keep a close watch on her to make sure her leg is ok. I really hope she makes it. The hard part is over I hope. Thnx for all the replies peeps.

Well actually when I went back in to grab the molt i left sitting on the table I noticed that there was a leg hanging from the molt and I looked at the little one and she is now indeed missing a leg. She seems to be moving around ok but I have put her in ICU for now and hope that there is no blood. I can not see any so I am hoping for the best. By tomorrow morning I should know.

Hey,
Sorry I didn't get a response in. I just crawled out of bed. Yes, amputating is hard; I had to do it on my rosie. But, she was free from her molt, and in a few more molts, had a new leg. Good luck with your wee one.

sorry I missed this too. I did the same thing with one of the versi slings, had to amputate, it all went well. Generally, if a sling 'helps' the leg come off, there's not alot of hemolymph loss, and they are good as new on the next molt.
Glad to hear all is well

Usually if the leg come off at the point it meets the body there is no need for nu skin as they have a kind of valve there that shuts off the blood flow. The only time legs tend to be a real problem is when they don't come all the way off and are leaking from one of the joints.

for what it's worth now, the schultzs' reccomend a solution of about 1 or 2 drops of dishwasher liquid to a quart of water to lube up tough molts. applied with a q-tip.

Thank you all for your replies! My Aurantiaca is still alive so all is well. She is still in ICU but I will be moving her back into a clean vial probably later today. Now im just wondering how well she will deal with the one kinda messed up leg she still has. 7 legs but one is kinda funky lookin. Oh well she still gets around fine and it should only be about a month until she molts again so hopefully all will go well and she will have all 8 legs back.
