We have had our Cobalt Blue for over a year, the past few months she has been eating really well, her abdomen was swollen and we thought she was getting ready to molt. This morning we looked into her tunnel and saw that she was laying down a heavy layer of silk, so we assumed it was a molting bed. But, after giving her peace and quiet for most of the day, we took a look, and rather than seeing a molting T, we see her hovering protectively over a huge white ball of silk. It looks for all the world like an egg sack. We never bred her, she molted once last year, just a couple months after we got her. The ball is over an inch in diameter.
The picture below is taken through the side of the tank, she has a elaborate system of tunnels in there. The white curtain of silk to the left is the remains of the silk bed she was constructing this morning. Those are her brilliant blue legs guarding the ball of silk. She is normally psychotic (we named her Devilkin for a reason), so disturbing her now probably wouldn't work out too well.

She has been eating up to 10 crickets every three days for the last three months. Her abdomen was getting really huge right before this happened, but she seemed healthy and active, so we thought it was just pre-molt bloat. She's a good-sized T, she has about a five-inch leg span and can bite through a cardboard box with no problem. Can't get a good look at her abdomen to see what it's like now. We bought her from the local pet shop almost exactly a year ago, she would have to have been bred before then if it is an egg sack. How long do they take?
Has anyone here had experience with egg sacks or gravid tarantulas? If it isn't an egg sack, what else could it be? What do we do?? How many babies could be in there? This wasn't the Christmas present we were expecting.

If she has moulted in your care but never been mated, there is no way the eggsac can be fertile....

I might be wrong but I think its impossible for a female to drop a viable egg sack in this situation, if you havent mated her and she has moulted in your care any sperm she may of been storing would have been lost in the moult (at least thats how I understand it, but as I said I may be wrong) I was reading in the latest issue of the BTS journal about phantom eggsacks, so I would guess that this is what you have here.

No need to worry, she will eventually eat it as it is infertile, no chance of any slings unless...
This was today right?
Perhaps hundreds of little tarantula messiahs...
Immaculate Fertilization? :D

I hope you guys are right (except the immaculate fertilization part  ), we're totally not prepared for any psyotic blue babies. I haven't heard of phantom egg sacks before, but I think we're probably seeing one first hand. We'd heard that they drop the sperm with the molt, so this really had us wondering. She made the silk ball sometime between 9:00am and 3:00pm, today(Christmas day). We'll keep taking notes and pictures, and see what happens. I guess this settles any questions about whether she's a female :). Any idea what might have made her do this? It seems like a lot of wasted energy on her part.
