Got this one today but it was labeled a tiger rump. Totally wrong. I don't want to set it up until I know what it is. Anyone have a clue???

Haplopelma vonwirthi.

Definitely looks WC; I would quarantine it for a month or so before putting it anywhere near the rest of your collection. I say this because I have had horrible experiences with WC spiders. :)

looks like a Haplopelma longipes to me, anyone feel free to correct me, but i got one just recently as well. I used to work in a pet shop and frequently if a T is labeled "tiger rump" or "thai birdeater" on the distributors stock list it usually is H. longipes, and most pet stores just label thier stock as they receive it from the distributor. Mine was labeled "black velvet birdeater" and ive heard em called "thai tiger rumps", so the label you got was both correct and incorrect, just another reason why common names suck.

that is not a H longipes. Real longipes have thick scopulae on legIV. see link:

That is spider needing ID is Haplopelma sp 'Vietnam'. This name is synonymous with 'Haplopelma vonwirthi', which Draiman has already stated.

Thanks everyone. I was thinking it was a haplo of some sort. Now I know lots of substrate and watch it dig.

A lot is explained about this somewhere in the Haplopelma genus thread but it takes some serious scrolling to find it...

H. longipes has longer leg IV than leg I where minax group T's are about equal. The scopula on the leg IV goes about 2/3 of the way up the metatarsus on longipes and also has a more brushy appearance. Same scopula goes only about 1/3 of the way on minax group.
H. sp vietnam/vonwirthi and H. minax are in the same "group" and are not as easy to differentiate, may end up being the same sp. anyway. Minax typically has less obvious pattern on the abdomen and a slight olive tint to the carapace.

i too have bought one of these tarantulas, yours looks EXACTLY like mine. but i eventually found out and i am almost 100% sure that it is a Haplopelma Vonwirthi. Very aggresive, dont like light, and somehow very enjoyable (IMO)
