Snipes most altricial (i.e. helpless) baby animals (humans included) have a hard time maintaining constant body temp.

Do they do it consciously? It just sounded to me like it had an internal thermostat that it could tinker with

No, they don't do it conciously, yeah the zookeepers chose of words could be better.
