When I had a gypsy moth caterpillar it was ready to shed it's skin, so the next day I checked on it and I see a big hole in the dead carcass, and hanging from it by silk was this tiny cocoon-like thing. It's smaller than my pinkie nail, hard, and seems to be made out of hardened silk. I have kept it for 2 months, but nothing emerged. Is it a cocoon, egg,or fungus? This is a drawing I created of what it looks like.
