this guy crawled across my foot... can anyone even fathom a guess... i have never seen a spider with a white abdomen. the legs remind me of a trapdoor spider, but we dont have those here in Los Angeles that im aware of, plus I have it in a delicup and it dont burrow, but it eats like a pig. Thanks to my cat for pointing it out to me as it ran over my foot.

Great creatures....I'm sure you've already noticed the long chelicerae. These guys are quite common in West Virginia.

actually i'm almost postive we have at least once species of trap door, and like 5-6 other non-theraphosid myglamorphs
we should have Bothriocyrtum californicum (i think that is the species name)

I don't think it's a Dysderidae, the diverging spinerets indicate that it's a Gnaphosidae.

on second thought, the picture is to blurry to judge anything from the spinerets, perhaps Clubionidae?

that sounds like a call for another pic :)

if you take more pictures, could you try to get one of the eye arrangement, Jeko?

or if that is not possible, try to make a drawing in msPaint of how the eyes look to you.

the eye arrangment is the easiest way to make some Family distinctions, in my opinoin, at any rate :)

I did another search and another check of the spider and i dont think its Dysdera crocata... the jaws are totally different... they are not that big as in Dysdera crocata... it is truely an amazing spider, i have never seen a native species that aggressive.. the legs are thick, hard to tell from the above pix but i swear the legs remind me of a trapdoor...i know the chances of that are remote.

the overall look of the spider is Dysdera, but i've never seen an aggressive one, and i've played with maybe ~100 or so

also, i think the jaws are always pretty massive on Dysdera...

so i have no idea :(

the trapdoors around here have much shorter abodomens
heh, oh yeah, and they are black... i forgot that

I've been finding them a lot lately. first year I've ever seen them. Been wondering what they are myself. The males of the species resemble ants and I have only noticed them with the influx of carpenter ants in my home leading me to the conclusion that they are ant mimics. What you have is a female and when their abdomens aren't as distended they have what looks in my opinion like a white coyote face on them.

On a note I'm basing my "I.D" body structures. Next time I see one prowling about the walls at night I'll snap a picture, the pictures I have on my computer are too large to be uploaded to this site.

definitely a Clubionidae, possibly the Clubiona genus (the abdominal mark leads me to that).

Cheers

Berhard is right about Clubionidae/Gnaphosidae. To me the narrow head and something with the overall habitus is more like Gnaphosidae than Clubionidae. There are gnaphosids with cardiac mark on the abdomen as well, for example Drassodes (which the one on the photo is not). The eyes cannot be seen very clearly but the posterior median ones are (in my opinion) too close to be a Clubiona.

Ok So here goes, I believe that this may be the same if not a very closely related spider. Sorry it took me so long to find some more to post photos of it, hope this helps.
