While I was nodding off in differential equations class earlier this afternoon I happened to notice smoething odd on my shirt, i thought it was a fuzzball but it was moving, so i picked it off and sat it on my hand and sure enough it was some kind of insect I'd never seen before. Presumably it fell out of a tree and landed on my shirt while i was headed to class. I would have brought it back for photographing but I had no container, so i took a page of notes watching it move around for the rest of class in hopes that someone here cuold ID it based on description. Therefore I present to you the condensed and coherent version of what i wrote:
And that's it..if shown a picture I could probably give a positive ID but I've honestly never seen anything like it beffore
Small insect, fits between the lines on college rule notebook paper (approx 1/4 inch)
Appears to be covered in soft pale green lichen or some other spongy substance; covers entire top of body including head
Leg tips and jaws visible, no antenna
has distinct curved mandibles; bites and/or feeds when crawling on hand. Bite was felt clearly but not painful, on the order of a mosquito bite, left small red mark that quickly faded
Moved very slowly for an insect of that size, in jerky steps, frequently rocked back and forward in a motion similar to how mantids sway to mimic a leave moving in the wind. Moved in bursts of activity followed by sitting still for several minutes. appeared t obe more active while on skin
resisted being flipped over, however its body , under the green growth appeared to be fairly flat
And that's it..if shown a picture I could probably give a positive ID but I've honestly never seen anything like it beffore
