If you are refering to the 2 small kritter keepers on the lower shelf.... Those are crickets. It's not sand though.... Its egg carton. Lol although now that I looked again, I does kinda look like sand in the picture!

you should buy one of those things that lets you like control the way the lights flash, so u can make 'em look like flashing lights or something.

The lights are not for heat. I have a oil filler radiator for that. The rope light is so that I can observe them at night, without disturbing them.

Although, the rope light does put out a little bit of heat. If I wasn't using the heater, The rope light alone would probably keep temps in the tanks at 70.
