I have a 6 year old budgie named Skye. She has a very shy disposition and is easily stressed. Well, today I came home from school to find a fleshy mass with blood and poop hanging out of her cloaca. I took her to the vet and apparently she wasn't able to pass an egg and her entire vulva (?) was hanging out and she wasn't able to poop or anything. I held her while the vet tried to get all of the crap out of there and give her enemas, and she had to cut part of the vulva in order to get the egg shell out. She gave her a shot of antibiotics and cleaned out the cloaca with an antibacterial.

All I can do now is wait. She's in a small cage now curled up on the bottom all fluffed out with her head down just breathing. There's a hot water bottle that she's snuggled up against and the cage is covered. I'm hoping for the best, but expecting the worst. :(

I'm glad I'm not the only one this has happened to. I feel like a bad bird mommy. :( I really do try to take good care of them. From now on my budgies get their own cages, I can't have the male trying to impregnate Skye again, she's just too old.

Ack. I just saw another post kinda like this, only it was a pacman frog that pushed a few organs out. The stars must be misaligned this week.

Best of luck for her recovery! That's a nasty thing to have happen to a pet.

Skye is doing better, she's awake and moving around, she tries to climb when I check on her, but she's still sitting on the bottom of the cage and is a little wobbly. Tonight is the big test, if she makes it through the night, she'll likely have a full recovery. *fingers crossed*

I had a chicken that would get a protruding cloaca too! We would wash it everyday and it eventually just... went back in.
It happened to her twice. She got better both times :D

Hope your baby pulls through!

Ive also had a few cockatiel hens that had egg binding, although none got the prolapsed cloaka. Seems that you are on the right track, i also just kept them warm and gave a bit of electrolytes now and then to keep them hydrated. Also, just keep her in a very clean container/cage, since ive heard that salmonella infections can occur during prolapses and the accompaning stress. Good luck with your budgie, hopes she pulls through!

Well she made it through the night so far. I'm giving her more water (she had acess to food and a small amount of water overnight) and changing the paper towel at the bottom and changing her hot water bottle.

I'm so sorry for your little one's injury, but keeping her seperate from the male won't mean she won't lay eggs. Most birds will lay an occasional egg even if it isn't fertile. Take the case of chronic egg layers for instance. The last one I had was a lovebird and she only laid one fertile egg in her life. But every six weeks she would lay another clutch. So it can happen.

Well, Skye has never laid an egg in her life except for this one. I hope it doesn't happen again.

After having the problems she had she might not. You will just need to keep any eye on her. How is her recovery going now?

best of luck

Sounds like you're doing everything you can. Make sure she keeps up on her fluids, might even try a little pedialyte. Egg binding sucks, and there's not a ton you can do unless you see them straining or notice the egg. A little olive oil in the cloaca can help in those instances, but not so helpful when it's already prolapsed. Hope it all works out.

Well, I'm still at school but I just called my brother to check on her and he said she's not moving. She's dead. :(

^That's very true. Tomorrow we're going to take a trip to the mountains and give her a nice burial near where I buried my sparrow that died 2 years ago.

Now, I still have the male, and I don't know if I should get him a new friend, or just keep him alone now. I'm not home enough to give him the social interaction he needs. If I were to get another budgie, would another male get along okay with him?

You can get him a new friend but look up ways of introducing them since throwing them in the same cage usually results in fighting. I had two males together before and when one died we introduced him to an elderly female parakeet. They were only together for six months before she died of old age. I don't think we'll be getting him a new friend. He seems okay alone, he screeches a lot more and is only quiet when he's sleeping or ripping apart his toys, but he was like that before. Mine doesn't get much interaction either.
