so i think,

he has dug himself a good tunnel that goes deep, and often stayed in it - not wanting food. I hadn't seen him in a bit, and today he was hanging on the side, at first glance i was like "WOW HE MOLTED" (mainly because he is much larger then what he was before).
Only to then discover no exoskeleton, so i took some shots,
does he need to really really molt, or do they get grungy looking easily

There were bits and pieces, mostly joints, on his body that were more exposed in their white translucent coloring

If your tarantula is larger, it molted. They absolutely 100% cannot grow without molting (unless you count their abdomens getting fat). Your T may have just shredded or hidden the old exoskeleton.

Does your pokie look faded in color? IMO it looks like it still is in premolt judging by the abdomen and how dark it looks.

I had a T that shredded its molt once. I had another that carried its around like a security blanket. She would not let me have it. She carried it until there was nothing left.
