My best friend does canine rescue work for alot of the vets back home in San Antonio, mostly with abused and neglected pit bulls. I had been thinking about getting a dog for about 6 months now, and over this past weekend I was back there for an expo, and well, came home with my new buddy.
Audrey.
She likes to eat pillows.
She has great big bat ears.
She rules.

Are her ears clipped, or is she just very alert? We got a pit puppy over the summer and that thing is huge now... extremely loyal aswell, they are probably the coolest dogs ever...

No, her ears are not clipped, nor her tail. Medical reasons non-withstanding (i.e; circulatory issues, infections, ect.) there is no reason to do either of those, in my opinion, mutilations.
Pits are great dogs. But because of idiot owners and the ever increasingly sensationalistic media, they have gotten a bad reputation. So much so that certain cities have banned the ownership of.
Funny thing, a study was done a few years ago pertaining to the tendency to be aggressive and bite within 100 breeds of canine, and the pit bull came in 4th place..........FROM THE BOTTOM.
That's #96.

every time I take my pit out and about I get asked " is he dangerous?" and "does he bite" lets not forget the old standard "is he aggressive?"

I used to go into a long statement about the bite data and the bad press... now I just say "no"

my pitbull is without a doubt the single greatest dog I have ever owned.
shame on anyone who cant see through a buch of bull about the breed and double shame on those who abuse the breed.

welcome to the pit family-

Agree. Pits are about the friendliest most social dogs I ever met, same goes for staffordshire bullterriers.
Media is doing the best to create a false image of these dogs and they have succeeded well here.

Several years ago, I had a pitbull/dane cross named Sampson, he was the best dog I've ever owned. Incredibly smart and loyal, he'd fetch soda cans out of the fridge and bring them to you. He was dog-aggressive, but he was great with kids, cats, and all of my small pets.

Nice looking Dog. I have/had friends/Family that owned PitBulls some were good owner some were not. I have been almost attacked by a PitBull, One of My Cousins was visiting my Dad, I walked into the yard the dog was playing with a stick looked at me and charged luckly there was a Car behind me I barely made it up he nipped the side of my lower leg. I'm not trying to start a debate but I admit I get uneasy when I come in contact with one, even though I have lots of friends that own PitBulls that are the most well behaved gentle Dogs I have come acrossed. Even though statistics show that they are the least likely to Bite, I would like to see what Dogs cause the most Deaths from attacks. If a PitBull attacks you or your Dog they have the potential to cause severe Damge or Death. I live by alot of idiots with pitbulls who let them run loose or don't secure them properly ( Had one jump a small fence and approach my Dogs the other day) luckly it was friendly or just intimidated by me. I have 2 Min Pins and I had one dog run after my dog at full speed ( Thankfully) and tried to grab it by them neck but over ran my Dog and missed... even when I picked up my Dog it was still jumping and Nipping at my Dog. If I would have had a Gun on me I would have shot it Dead on the Spot. From what I have seen it's not an easy Task to pry a determined PiTbulls Mouth Open once it's locked on.. I'm not Bashing PitBulls or Want them Banded But I think People should be just a little more Careful with this breed even though It's "Well Behaved" or "Wouldn't Hurt A Fly" Because all Dogs are Unpredictable, Now one can be 100% sure what their Dog will do any Breed but Some Breeds can cause a little more Damage Than others.......... Again Nice looking Dog.

Let me clear something Up, I am More worried about a PitBull attacking and Mauling My Dogs (Min Pins) Then me. It seems that they are more animal aggressive than Human aggressive. I would own a PitBull or Rottweiler but not If I owned any Small dogs.

not to get off topic...but that's the best use of random capitalizing i've ever seen ;)

friend of mine has a couple pit bulls...very nice dogs but i get a bit uneasy around them (not a dog person to start off with), just that ol' media image rubbing off and i was chased by plenty of dogs as a kid on a bike.

nice looking dog ya got there :)

Melmoth, Looseyfur, Lelle, Galeo, Ed, Holly, THANKS!

She seems to be settling in well. She's a bit nervous around strangers and noises she doesn't recognize, but that's to be expected in a new environment, and the abuse she has been through. I have worked with dogs in the past, mostly with a friend of mine who trains dogs for the military and police, and she's going to need alot of stability and love and reassurance before I can even consider working with her obdience issues, the simple commands, as she is very easily frightened and cowers with the stern. But she is a great dog, very smart, she already understands what "home" signifies, and runs up to the front door and nudges at it with her nose. Amazing really, considering She's been here barely 3 days and I have just been tapping the front door saying "home", but she's got it down already.

Beautiful girl you have there, and a wonderful idea to rescue one. I'd guess that now that Ontaria, Canada, has just banned them(along with Staffy Bulls and anything that vaguely resembles a Pit Bull), there will be a lot of rescues coming into the US. I would love to still keep them, but here the problem with people stealing them, even breaking into houses to get the dogs, is so bad that I can't have Pits anymore.

They are usually dog-aggressive and have a strong prey drive, so responsible ownership is required. By the way, tail docking is NOT typical and is against the breed standard in every registery. UKC and AKC(which registers them as American Staffordshire Terriers)will revoke a dog's papers if the tail is docked for anything other than medical reasons. Ear cropping is falling out of favor, too-besides, you have to admit those ears are cute and expressive!

ya if another dog attacked my dog I may feel the same but still a poor choice of words.

secondly I hope your not suggesting that pitbulls have "locking" jaws... I cant beleive ppl still beleive that crap.
Most responcible pitty owners carry a breaking bar incase their dog needs to be removed from something its biting.

I know you werent trying to stir things up with your post, just wanted to point out again...

Well I ment when they Bite they have a strong grip (Strong Jaw Muscles) as if if they locked on. My friends Dad had a PitBull and he had it trained to run up his chest and jump up to a rope that that was tied to a tried that was about 5-6' off the ground. dog would bite the rope "Lock On" and then my friends dad would then push the dog around while it was hanging form a rope, don't know what purpose this served, To show how strong of a grip it had,or to make the PitBulls Jaws stronger?

What you described is called a "spring pole". The main purpose is simply excersise for the dog, a way to "let off steam". These dogs have a LOT of energy, and get easily bored. A bored dog is a problem dog, so this is a way for them to get in their "workout" and get rid of some excess energy. The dogs think it's a game. PIt Bulls are able to hold onto something longer not because their jaws are stronger, but because they are WILLING to do so, and won't give up. Most dogs would let go as soon as they began to feel tired, but Pits will ignore discomfort and tiredness and keep going. That's why they need energy-release outlets like spring poles, otherwise they turn their attentions to stuff like furniture, siding on the house, underground water pipes, and carpet removal. Yes, it does make the jaw muscles stronger, as any excersise increases muscle strength, but this would apply to any dog willing to play with a spring pole, not just Pits.

There is absolutely no scientific evidence that Pit Bulls have stronger jaws than other same-sized breeds. Their jaw structure is identical to that of typical canines. The difference is that they were bred to grab and HOLD livestock, with a minimal of injury, even before they were used for fighting. Most dogs, when they bite, do a quick "defensive" snap/release, often jerking their heads as they bite. Other breeds, especially those in the Mastiff family, will also grip and hold, so Pit Bulls don't have a monopoly on this.
