I actually saw a couple all black ones at last years san jose rep. show. IM gonna get one this year. I was wondering why not sand? Since they do come from mexico. WEll im refering to the mexican black kingsnakes, Lampropeltis g. nigrita. WHen i get mine its going to be fed in a seperate cage.

Very nice-looking. I'm happy for you that yours is as docile as it seems. I've heard from others that this species can be a little aggressive. Good luck with him.

Aggressive nigrita? Never heard of that. I have 3 adult animals and had several babies, none have ever been even slightly aggressive. :)

They can be kept on sand, but sand is such a lousy substrate for snakes. One day when you decide to clean the cage and take out all the sand, you will find urin and possibly lots of other nice stuff on the bottom of the cage. Besides that it just stinks!

Sand is a terrible substrate for snakes due to the fact that it can get in between their scales, in their mouth, nose, and cloaca and cause plenty of problems. Very few snakes reside on sand dunes anyway.

The snake you have looks like a Mexican black kingsnake, and those do come in pure black, but some don’t. Some even have a chain-like pattern. I have one that is pure black, except for two white spots under his head, and one that has a chain pattern. It should be easy to find a dealer that has jet black Mexican black kingsnakes.

Neither of mine are aggressive towards me, but they are much more enthusiastic at feeding time than any of my other kingsnakes. I would say they are aggressive eaters.

That's a very pretty snake. I think I'd like to get a black rat snake at some point. I love that jet black look.
