I got an early birthday present from my partner yesterday - a crested gecko! I decided to get two in the end, and I was not disappointed, they're so cute. Skittish little babies...

They're both tricolor dalmatian harlequins. :)

The only thing that I don't like is how easily they lose their tail and never grow it back.

Yeah, that's a problem.
I specifically asked for ones with their tails because I prefer the look of the tailed ones (not that I'd abandoned these guys if they lost their's), and I've been pretty cautious to make sure they keep them so far.

I've heard stories of them losing their tails because someone is vacuuming in the other room. They lose them so easily...

The first picture is of the one that is the larger of the two. I think I'll be naming him Icarus, and the other Calypso (the one threatening me because I was trying to move her, lol).

Yeah, unfortunately... I've also heard of people misting their enclosures, and the gecko getting so spooked it drops it's tail!

Sensitive little buggers.

They have to be pretty damn stressed to drop their tails!

Yeah... It's understood that they often lose them as adults, so the energy they would need to expend to grow a new tail would much rather be spent on reproducing or something of the like.

I mean, each have their own personalities, so the stories are probably of very high strung individuals. Mine came fine, both had their tails intact! But I got overnight and I probably wouldn't recommend anything but if you're worried about their tails.

In the wild, virtually none of the adults have their tails. They get lost eventually, so they're by no means essential. At first, the geckos are a little clumsy and can't balance as well (amusing to watch, honestly) but they get used to not having the weight of their tail, and do just fine from then on.

I've had one male drop his tail due to my stupidity during a weigh in but I've had to grab my babies pretty clumsily many times and I never had one drop a tail.

My Crested Geckos freak me out about the tail issue but as long as their is no fighting between the two tails should stay on i feel like the stories of tails coming off is not as common

my Geckos are barely spooked so that might be why but. i have had them for 6 months now and they have grown significantly my one gecko will jump from my hands and catch himself with tail they hang from my plants on their tails. i know they are dopey and can lose their tail from jumping and if they still have their tail wrapped around something it could pop off.
