Hi All,
I'm new to the forums and my girlfriend just bought me my first Corn snake called Valkyrie that I thought I would share with you. I'm chuffed to bits, she's lovely :)

Here's her new home I just set up...

She seems really happy. Spent a couple hours burning round her new home, then gobbled down a pinky and is crashed out now with a full belly :)

Cheers... :)

is that light inside the enclosure? corns are excellent climbers and it may burn itself on the light. nice snake!

Hey pharaoh2653, no it's an anerythristic (or black) corn.

Hey atavuss, Thanks very much. Yeah the light is in the tank and I wasn't sure about that? Are snakes generally abit stupid when it comes to burning themselves? ie, just crawl into it despite the obvious heat intensity close by? Yesterday she sniffed at it and then backed off, making me think she's quite smart? What you reckon?

Oh and I had no idea snakes yawned :) That is the coolest yet sweetest thing I have ever seen :)

Cheers... :)

Cool, what you got mate? put up a pic :)

Mine's now buried herself in the substrate, I'm thinking this is normal behaviour after feeding last night? Trying to hide from predators whilst she has a full belly?

Still so much to learn about her, I've been on the net non stop looking for info :)

Blip...

unfortunately my snakes died due to hurricane katrina. and all of my old photos are trashed. i had a ghost corn, an amel, and a butter. i had more but i sold most of them prior to the hurricane. cornsnakes.com is a good site with lots of info, you should check it out if you havent already

IMHO it is better to be safe than sorry, I have all my basking lights and UVB lights outside the enclosures. the basking lights I have are in wire fixtures so that they can sit right on top of the screening.

Personally, I would keep the lid weighted, even a small snake can push the plastic lid open. I learned that the hard way, more than once...:wall:

that is true.. corn snakes are great escape artists.. I had 2 4' red albino corns that I put in the basment to cool them down before breeding and when I went down a couple weeks later one had escaped from the locking rubbermaid container.. I never found it...

as for the enclosure,

yes, that light should probably not be located inside the tank.. as for the tank, that is an excessive size for such a small snake.. what is that a 125 gallon?? you could get away with a 35 gallon for a corn snake...

pharaoh2653: Thanks for the info on that site and sorry to hear about your losses, you must be gutted...

atavuss: Nice one, I bought a shade for it temporarily but as my other post will be buying smaller "proper" vivs for them this weekend.

Nivek: Yeah I bought some Velcro strips and webbing to secure the lid as they seem to both like sitting on the plinths underneath.

CharlesRieder: Sorry for your loss... as above, getting proper vivs this weekend. That tank is about a 60 or so gallon.
