My neighbor killed his beardie

How is it possible that someone can be so negligent and let their bearded dragon die? I'm indignant on this situation. And sick to my stomach at the same time. :8o
My neighbors kid wanted a beardie (typical). So they got one a little while ago. I never got to see it because we're not close friends or anything, just hi and bye. So then recently my neighbor, who knew I had bearded dragons, came up to me one day and asked me if I knew what might be wrong with his "animal." He said he was hardly moving, eating, and he would twitch slightly. I feared MBD. So I asked about his setup and things. From what I know he wasn't dusting with calcium more than a few times a week  and was using the same lights for their iguana! How on earth they managed to keep an iguana is beyond me. I was horrified and told them to feed calcium daily, take to the vet and change the lights. I told him I could give him some spares I have (they were Zilla Desert 50 bulbs). I had bought one too many and he went off acting like he knew about uvb saying he'd read some report and those lights were being overlooked so he wanted nothing to do with them. I was appalled by this mans ignorance. I'm ashamed to call him my neighbor at this point. I told him that zilla recalled and redid all their 50 series tube uvb bulbs. And I assured him I'd been using them for almost a year (since they came out) and my beardies are perfectly healthy (unlike he can say for his). So by this point I was too frustrated and went home. I ran into him a few days later and he said the beardie died on the way to the vet. Oh my goodness... :wall:

He is TRULY a spineless wonder.

Thats so terrible.

I hate it when people get animals and are not wanting to put time and effort into caring for it properly. :( Its a depressing and horrible to only being able to sit back and watch while an animal suffers.
If he was coming to you for advice it seems like he would have taken it into more consideration and not act like your someone who doesnt know what their talking about. ugh.

Typical....
Same story. Old friend of mine called me because she saw the pics of mine on myspace. She is so arrogant (I don't talk to her but I don't mind helping or trying to find answer to a question for anyone who ask) called me wanting one cause they are so easy to care for because petsmart said so. "All you need is a 10 gallon, a 25 watt bulb, sand, heat rock, and pellets. They live in the desert so they don't need water." (Same one that wanted a frog for some kid. Its dead too.) Gave her info, websites, and advice to which she refused to listen to. I spent all night typing everything up and copying and pasting web address. To which she said she did not find one thing that said anything I told her. :wall: (Did ya try the Dragon breeder sites and forums I sent you.) Beardie lived three weeks. I hate these people, not because the animal died but they are "too good for help".

And I'm an idiot to her because I didn't use sand, bought from someone online rather than petco, bought all that expensive stuff (lights and supplements), and built my own cage. Who did their homework first and who's dragons are still alive. I mean how hard is it to ask a question and if you don't like the answer search for it. Ok building my own cage was something I decided to do now for when they get bigger. Just cause I wanted XYZ and decided to try to build something.

(Being sarcastic here.) Thanks everyone who gave me the wrong advice and the poor quality non-pectco breeder who sold me my ugly dragons.

;P Must not be too ugly if she wanted one after she saw mine. BTW Moose9 your girls are doing great.

Actually, a lot of people kill their baby bearded dragons. They are usually first time reptile owners and don't really know to properly care for these animals.

Few times I think its because of innocent ignorance, which I still don't see how ignorance can be innocent since they LITERALLY didn't take the time to research. But anyway, most of the times I encounter stubborn arrogance. That is the worst of them all. I might be able to pity the innocent, but the arrogant are way past. This topic is pretty much a run around, since there is not much we can do.

I've also met people who give the wrong advice. You said you recommended zilla bulbs, and yeah the deserts were heavily talked about but that's old news. I have a few myself! And they're perfectly fine! But obviously if they're closed-minded apart from ignorant, then you will get this sort of outcome. It sucks really, but what can you do?
And its also sad how some store employees can do the same. Its pretty scary, but thats what happens when people don't research. It's all about the research. And I'll admit when I had other animals like rabbits and birds as a kid, I didn't. But I was a child. Thats my excuse. I didn't even had internet as a child.
