Hey, I have 2 chihuahuas & a Boston Terrier. They are inside dogs and live along side our cats. The problem I that the dogs LOVE eating cat crap. They gobble the stuff up as if they were McDonalds fries. The dogs are the same size as the cats so its hard to keep them out of the litter boxes. Scolding has
had no effect. Does anyone know of a litter box design that would only allow cats to enter or do you
have an idea of how I could maybe elevate the boxes??? Please help! This is really disgusting :sick::sick:

The have some cat boxes where the hole is in the top. This might help.
Other than that, maybe gate off the liter box. Something the cat can jump over and the dogs can't..?

Good luck.

I put a baby gate up in the doorway of the room where the litter box is. Dogs will eat cat poop; that's just the way it is.

When I had both dogs and cats, we referred to the litter pan as the 'snack bar'... Baby gate works.

Might be gross, but its completely natural. Alot of animals do this. Coyotes eat thier own poop, as well as tortoises. There is extra nutrients that their body doesnt process the first time, so they re-eat it to get the nutrients that are left. A buddy of mine had a boston bull who would go out into the snow and find poop that the pomeranian had left. Then would bring them on the porch eating them. They called those ones "turd-cicles".

Yep baby gate, dogs love cat poop. I keep my litter box in the laundry room, and there is a cat door for them to come and go. Thankfully our dog is too big to fit through the cat door, so this works well here. If my dog was small, or I didn't have this option I would use a baby gate to keep him away from the litter.

our puppy used to eat the "kitty roca" all the time too.
All the sudden we noticed she had worms (this is within the first month or two of getting her).

Anyways, we have since got her dewormed, and the vet suggested dosing the cats with fresh/real pineapple juice. We would fill up an eyedropper and give the cats a drink every morning for about a week.

It has worked well, for us at least, and our dog has stopped eatting the poo ever since.
I dont know if it was just a new puppy thing, or what but the pineapple juice is definitely worth a shot

Who doesn't?

We had a cairn terrier who would eat her own poo. She was sneaky about it too. She would poop in the morning and then go sit 20 feet away and just chill out all nonchalantly like we didn't know her plan. The moment you turned around or went inside she would charge over to eat it.

In the winter she would bring in frozen turds to thaw out. Sometimes she would poo and turn and eat simultaneously while one of would charge at her to scare her away from her poo! This would be fine, her eating her feces, but she would vomit it up later and you could smell it on her breath!

Are the dogs getting sick? If not I don't see a problem! They're just helping you clean up!

As for the OP's dilemma I second or third the baby gate idea.

We never had that problem as the litter box is in a place we don't let the dog go. It is pretty normal though.

That is one of the nastiest things I've ever heard. Thanks:barf:

Solid Gold puts out a product called S.E.P. (stop eating poop) It is a powder you sprinkle over the cats food and it makes it taste repulsive, to the point where the dog will most likely vomit the first time he gets a taste of it! We sell it often and have never had any returns for the product.

Does it have a version to sprinkle over dog food as well?

They have a few different products for dogs. I have read and seen people use pineapple chunks too.

Sometimes (not always) when dogs eat their own (or other) dog poop it is because either a) they are lacking something in their diet or b) their food is high in carbohydrates and the carbs break down into sugar in their digestive system, giving the poop an irresistible "sweet" taste on the other end of things.

Usually the working ingredient in all those products is just MSG. I don't think it's the healthiest thing in the world, but any source of msg would work (meat tenderizer, etc). The big boxes with the holes on top would probably work best with your small dogs.

As others suggested a top entry litter box will work. I have used the same one for years and it is lovely(as lovely as one can be lol). We have six litter boxes and the ones that aren't top entry are behind baby gates or are in rooms the dogs aren't allowed in by themselves lol.
