Well, yesterday I got my lovely little female G. aureo---my first spider!

No photos, as my camera is a hunk of junk, but she is a little yellow-stripey beauty, about 4.5 inches. I put her carefully in her new 10 gallon aquarium with about six inches of substrate, a cleaned and baked cactus gourd for a hide, and a heart-shaped granite water dish.

She very tentatively explored her new digs, mostly when I wasn't looking (every time I walked into the room she was somewhere else, but she'd stop when I came over to look). This morning, she was in her hide, and had hung a variety of thin, whispy nets from floor to ceiling, plus a couple of plumb lines to her hide.

Still in her hide this evening. I put in a fat cricket, but I think it's bugging her. I hope she comes out exploring sometime. I'm so easy to please, just watching her move one of her legs is a big deal!

I named her Oon-Chee---Lakota for "Grandmother."

Agreed. Impusively bought a Chilean rose, came here, and now I own no less than 7, like less than a month later. ;P And I am trying to spend more money on some tonight. :wall: :wall: :wall:

Congratulations! My first was also a female g.aureostriata. They're beautiful spiders. Don't worry if she hides out quite a bit right now, mine hid for a few weeks (and then molted). This species also seems to like digging and rearranging everything, so you'll get plenty of enjoyment from her. :)

Getting to know you...

"Don't worry if she hides out quite a bit right now, mine hid for a few weeks (and then molted). This species also seems to like digging and rearranging everything, so you'll get plenty of enjoyment from her."

Thanks for the heads up on the hiding, Alexis. I was starting to feel like a bad mother...

She seems to come out each evening at around dusk. I still haven't seen her move...just shows up sitting somewhere else each time I enter my office. Come morning, there are new silver threads of delicate web. I wonder if she is in a bigger place than she was before, and is laying out weblines to be sure she finds her way back to her hide!

There are a few single lines from the top of her tank to her hide, a thread or two from her water to her hide, and a lovely zig-zagging pattern across the front of her tank, like long scratch marks.

Of course, I am pondering "another one" but I hope I can make myself wait a little longer! The fellow I bought her from said he had 1,400. OMG:eek:   !!

My biggest G. aureo is about the size of yours so I can share some observations that might help. My girl tends to hide during the day and if she is going to come out she does it after dark. She doesn't eat a lot, I offer 1 roach a week and if she eats it right away I give another. They are big diggers, my girl dug a deep burrow under her hide and I had to move it because I was afraid it would fall on her. They tend to be very calm and she doesn't mind me doing cage maintenance. I overfill the water dish slightly once every 2 to 3 weeks.
Congrats on your new T!!!

My new statue

Hi Mina: Yes, mine sounds like yours. She comes out after dark. Isn't that a movie title?

And she is digging a deeper burrow in her hide, which is gourd-like boot, with openings at both ends. One end is buried, so she is tunneling there. Honestly, I have yet to see her move....I'm resisting the urge to go bug her, no pun intended:)
