This is my 12-13" pure white male midas. I got rid of a 13"white/orange male midas and 13" bichir so this pure white midas can have this 125gallon tank (6' long). Hes currently house with his buddy (african cichlid), where they been kept together for 2 yrs. This is only fish he will not kill.
This is closest you can get to have a dog in water. Hes very aggressive to other people. But he let me pet him, and he hits tank lid when he wants food. : )

Why do you do that much of a water change at a time? I understand the more waterchanges promotes somewhat of a faster growth- but 75% seems excessive. I would think like 10-20% weekly is a great amount to promote fast growth.

I agree. I've been in the exotic fish hobby for 20 years and 75% change every two weeks is extremely excessive. The problem is that you are most likely disturbing the bacteria culture living inside the gravel that helps filter your tank naturally. It seems backwards, but cutting back your water changes to 20% once a month will result in a cleaner tank in the long run. Also, are you treating the water with salt, and what brand of dechlorinator are you using?

Water change is good for fish, no matter what. I dont really measure exactly how much I removed, but it makes the largest fish almost to tilt on the side, then I stop and fill it back up (w/ stresscoat of course). So basically Im doing around 80%-85% to be exact.
Massive waterchanges promotes explosive growth. Ive read breeders even doing 100% waterchanges to promote faster growth.
BTW, dont do 50% or more waterchanged if your fish is not used to it. They will go into shock. But if there used to it, it good for them. Also, dont do massive waterchange to african cichlid, they go into shock if Ph been changed drastically in instant. But Central American cichlids, like dovii, midas/red devil, orscars. JD, seems bullet proof and benefit most from massive waterchanged.

Just remember most large Central American cichlids when matures will become very territorial and must be keep solo. Unless tank is huge. 300g or more.

Yeah, I never went back to owning dogs again. This big fishes are really "wet pet", theyre interaction with you is almost as close to having a dog. I know, its way better than a cat, but not as good as dog.
