I am going to consider the first installment of this thread a success for two reasons
1) All of the original 16 or so are still alive except for three. One died during a molt and two died from unknown causes (one is still alive but I am quite sure it's not going to make it)
2) One reproduced. I nearly missed it, but there was a baby or two running around there for awhile. I believe they eventually became dehydrated and died because I forgot to put in waterbites for about a week.
The only problems I incurred with the heat pad/ cable method were that heating an enclosure from the bottom apparrently increases dessication tenfold. Waterbites don't last two days in there
To remedy this problem, I am going to construct a second enclousure which will be a modification of the first that consists of a ceramic heat emmitter designed for a 50 gallon tank, a dimmer switch attached to the base of that and an electronic thermometer that will tell the temperature inside the enclosure.
What kind of roaches will I need to use? I would like something that is semi-cold weather tolerant and can tolerate temperatures that are quite high (110 or so during the summer) and won't dessicate easily. In addition, I need them to be tasty for leopard geckos.
I'm thinking lobsters...is this a good idea?
I will start construction on this part of the project soon.
